Actual words I overheard today between two coworkers. One mentioned wondering how many US soldiers have died since this started and the other looked like she had been tasered.
Here's the gist of it:
Shocked Woman: I don't know! But the war ended a long time ago, anyway.
Questioning Woman: (laughs) No it didn't.
Shocked Woman: Yes, it did! Soldiers aren't still dying in Iraq. They had an election!
Questioning Woman: (laughs again, not a "that was funny" laugh, but a really bitter one) Soldiers probably died TODAY in Iraq. And what does the election have to do with it? We're still occupying them.
Shocked Woman: No, only IRAQIS are dying in Iraq. Not our soldiers. Big difference.
Questioning Woman: I hate to break this to you, but that's wrong. Soldiers ARE still dying in Iraq. And what do you mean by big difference?
Shocked Woman: I mean it's THEIR country. They've got to put some work in to make it work. If it means death from time to time, well, some Americans died making this country a country.
At this point I wanted to vomit. I looked at Questioning Woman and said "Can I butt in here? I might be able to help."
Then I schooled Shocked Woman for about twenty minutes. She asked me "where do you get this stuff?" and I said, "I read from a lot of different sources." I pulled up some stuff on my computer and gave her some links on a post-it note. Encouraged her to check them out. She kind of mumbled "thanks" then said "I still don't think any soldiers are dying over there anymore. There's no war."
God. I had JUST sat there and explained to her all of that. What was the point? What a farging waste of time. Questioning Woman and I looked at each other and had a nice chat. I had no idea she was so liberal before today. New friends are nice. :-)
