Did anyone happen to hear Howard Stern's show yesterday? re: HST
He said that things are not adding up regarding Hunter S. Thompson's
"suicide", and mentioned that when police initially approached the house, they heard gunshots. HST's son Juan, who was of course, in the house at the time, maintained that he was firing off a "salute" to his dead father!! This was certainly the first time I heard this
being reported, and it shocked the hell out of me. A salute??? WTF?? If this is true, I shall begin working on my chapeau du foil immediately.

1. It is true, but there is also the now appearing word on the typewrite

"Counselor"

Where the police first reported it had nothing on it and are now saying there was a single word.

This will make the compsiracy nuts crzy for years, especially since he supposedly had been telling rolling stone he was going to do something really hard hitting. But that's industry rumor... it spreads worse than smallpox.

2. Leave it to HST
The truth is that he hadn't written anything good in years and years. The guy had talent, but lost it about thirty years ago. I mean, his only gig at his death was writing a sports column for ESPN2.com - what is THAT?

I saw an article that said HST had told people he was working on a story about how the planes didn't bring down the WTC, that it was done by explosives in the basement, and that he was gonna expose the whole plot.

My guess is that he spread that story to leave behind a brouhaha and confusion after his suicide. That would be a worthy HST caper, don't you think?

I'm not too familiar with Mr. Thompson being young and all but great words and I applaud him. THEY are the KKK! They are worse then the KKK I think. The KKK at least did their own killing. Bush is having our people do killing for him! :puke: :argh:

15. Please
It was strained and tedious and, if you thought his recent - let's be generous and say the last thirty years - work was interesting, I'd say your standards are far lower than mine. That would account for your vociferous defense of the indefensible.

He ended up writing a sporadic online column for a sports network. Yeah, that's a sign of a fully realized talent, for sure.

not only was he a lone voice among the M$MW he was as spot on about the politics of today as he was in his supposed peak.

the man was brilliant throughout his career, more than i can say for any of your work.

22. You're familiar with my work?
Do tell?

What, you buy the trial transcripts? Or you've watched my TV work?

Or, perhaps you've been observing my children from a distance?

There's a name for that, you know.

How hard is it to be on spot about the politics of today?

Read his endorsement article on John Kerry for Rolling Stone. It was agonizingly dull, aimless, wandering. Sure, HST was on our side, and that made him stand out, espcially since there's no one with anything remotely resembling Thompson's reputation around to carry that flag, but if you try to read all that was published since the Fear and Loathing books, you'll pretty much pass out from boredom.

And for people who honestly believe that HST did his best work when stoned/drunk/tripping, grow up. You're buying the myth and that's just absurd. He worked hard at his writing, and that's not anything that gets done in any kind of state of intoxication. Ask anyone who knew him.

28. Oh, now we get personal?
The subject was HST, and now you want to insult me?

That's unfortunate. Without arrows of information and knowledge in your quiver, you end up stomping on your own unit, all the time wondering why you're in pain.

But, I do hope you feel better. I sure do.

6. You know, I find that very strange....You find the body of your father,
dead at the kitchen table of what appears to be a self-inflicted
gunshot wound, and so you begin firing a shotgun in "tribute"??? Especially since his (Juan's) young son was present... Now, normally
I wouldn't be donning the tinfoil, but what with my finding out this
new (to me) tidbit yesterday, and the apparent botched attack on the Italian journalist...it's like Elmer Fudd has declared it's Wabbit Season....heh heh heh heh.

29. Try this
HST's family is probably very different from yours, and from the ones who are busily erecting verbal shrines to him. People observe death in all sorts of ways. Some might find it strange that bodies are drained of blood, stuffed with chemicals, fixed up with makeup, dressed up, and put on display. Others might find it strange that there are religious rituals that require fellow Jews to sit all right with the enshrouded body until the burial.

So, the Thompson family doesn't share your orientation towards death.

So?

For HST fans, you people are showing a remarkable collection of narrow thinking and limited acceptance of people different from you.

8. I tend to agree.
The guy's making his final exit....and he leaves no last thoughts? If there was anyone in this world that'd leave some parting words, it seems HST would certainly be one. I wonder, though, if he happened to be extremely loaded at the time? He could have been so hammered that he made a rash decision and just did it. I guess that wouldn't surprise me either.

Regardless, it is frustrating to those that have been lifelong fans to not have any definitive words that explained the reason for his decision.

Thanks for the comp!

peace back at ya!

:-)

This whole episode with Hunter's son Juan is strange, though. If you've just called the police and they are responding to a death....I'd think that firing a shotgun would not be a particularly bright thing to do. A very odd reaction for a son to his father's death under the circumstances....

9. EErie! from BRNews forum-Rice Chooses Her 'Counselor'
by John F. McManus
March 5, 2005

Philip Zelikow, a former close associate of Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, has been reunited with her and will serve as her senior adviser at the State Department.
The two became close when they worked together during the administration of George H.W. Bush. In 1999, they collaborated as co-authors of the book, Germany Unified and Europe Transformed: A Study in Statecraft. Commenting on the selection of Zelikow, Rice stated: “Philip and I have worked together for years and I value his counsel and expertise.” For the past six years, Zelikow, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations since 1992, led the University of Virginia’s Center for Public Affairs as its executive director. During that period, he also served as the executive director of the 9/11 Commission.

In his new position, Zelikow will be referred to simply as “Counselor of the U.S. State Department.”
