El Segundo rejects Agatha Christie, Jack London

City Council refuses to name new meeting rooms at library after the two writers, who are deemed to be too un-American.

Agatha Christie and Jack London books are easily found on the shelves of the El Segundo Public Library, but the City Council has deemed the two celebrated authors too un-American -- literally and figuratively -- to attach their names to new meeting rooms at the library.

Council members Tuesday rejected the recommendations by library staff members and supporters, sending them back to the drawing board to widen the list of authors.

Councilman John Gaines made the first objection, asking why Christie, a British citizen, and London, a onetime socialist, were selected.

"I've read a lot of (Christie's) books," he said. "I'm a murder-mystery man, but can't we pick an American?"

5. Actually, they have been complaining about proximity to LAX
I guess they have a point..

How crazy can they get? But, hey, if in neighboring Orange County the GOP chair wants to cancel a program to send college kids to Spain because it does not like us anymore... why not go after authors?

2. If you look up fucking asshole in this library's dictionary, there's a
photo of these two council members.

How incredibly narrow-minded and stupid.

4. Yes, we all know being a socialist automatically means being a Stalinist
For me being a socialist, I must almost always have to begin by stating that I have nothing in common with the likes of Stalin or Mao and that yes, there are other methods towards achieving socialism that are democratic if not highly democratic (libertarian) in methodology.

Does this mean Noam Chomsky is an America-hating, Godless sonnuvabitch for being a libertarian socialist?

OK, if I'm so un-American for being a socialist, what would happen if I walked before the City Council? Are they going to arrest me for being a terrorist? For being a Godless, America-hating sorry sack of shit that I am?

6. The irony of a library calling someone out for being socialist
Um, who funds the libraries? All of us? Oh.
