Slavery is not just the shameful stuff
of history books - not in Florida
The Palm Beach Post presents a three-part examination of slavery,
its costs and its effects - on the migrant workers, and on you

http://www.migrationint.com.au/ruralnews/palau/jan_2003...
Three men, brothers Juan and Ramiro Ramos, and a cousin, Jose Ramos, were sentenced to 10 to 12 years in prison for enslaving 700 unauthorized workers in Florida's citrus groves near Lake Placid in Okeechobee County from January 2000 to June 2001; they also forfeited $3 million from their immigrant smuggling operation. The Ramos' R & A Harvesting, Inc charged workers a $1,000 smuggling fee, and deducted it from the workers' wages.

5. second link not working either?

Has something new developed?

>Trafficking. Juan Ramos, a citrus labor contractor from Lake Placid, was sentenced to 15 years in prison and $20,000 in fines in May 2004 for conspiracy and for harboring 100 Mexican workers against their will. The Ramos brothers and a cousin were convicted in November 2002 but appealed; the cousin was exonerated, and the 12-year sentence Juan received was overturned.

The three were arrested in May 2001 following a two-year investigation that concluded they had recruited more than 600 illegal Mexican migrants and prevented them from leaving the poor housing in which they were held. The Ramos' attorney asked the judge for leniency because "This business of harboring illegal immigrants is widespread" in the citrus industry.<

3. Jebbie gives....................
Orange and Sugar Cane growers "special" exemptions in return for "special" donations. Florida is, and has always been, a cesspool of government.
I've seen these people in busses going to the groves, going to WalMart etc. I always wondered if they were illegals. I NEVER knew they were slaves, but in Jeb's Florida, I should have figured it out.

4. This isn't happening just in Florida, it's
also happening in every single state with a large migrant/immigrant labor population. Read Eric Schlosser's book "Reefer Madness, Inside America's Underground Economy." It has a whole section on exploitative migrant/immigrant labor practices that's a real eye-opener. California is one of the biggest problem areas, particularly the strawberry and other agricultural businesses. He's the author of "Fast Food Nation", btw, another major eye-opener.
