My daughter went back to work with Tsunami victims in India and Sri Lanka
last night. Before, she boarded her plane, she and I had some time to chat about things.I will just summarize what she said. She said" Dad, you as a Liberal Democrat, are upset when you see unjust treatment in our country, but bad as things are for you,it is nowhere near the injustices I have seen in India and Sri Lanka.I deal with some of the poorest people on earth and have been told that as a rich American woman, I should not waste my time with these wretched people and spend time with some of the wealthier people in my town. The way people without money or of a lower caste or Muslims are treated in India would not be accepted by you.I have tolerated it only because I feel I can help those who are in great need.I am just sick of the romanticizing of India and Sri Lanka.I have now come to believe that our country may be bad except for all the countries that are infinitely worse.

I told my daughter this is why I wanted her to go even though her mother and I were very concerned about her health and safety.I am proud that she has taken the side of the "least among us" and not throw her weight around as a rich American.

1. She sounds wonderful.
You are quite fortunate; she sounds like a smart, capable, empathetic young woman. Just the kind of daughter we all hope for.

2. She brought home to me how cruel and callous some of these so called
poor countries can be.
