CNN:Catholics Didn't Vote For Social Justice - They Voted Their Pocketbook
Guest of Aaron Brown's, I think his last name was Wilkes (??) - an author.

He said, "Catholics didn't vote for Social Justice - they voted their Pocketbooks" in the last Presidential Election (paraphrased obviously).

I am a Catholic and I agree with his assessment.

But I voted for Social Justice - not my pocketbook.

I voted for the Catholic candidate.

I voted for John Kerry.

2. I agree.
Even though our chruch teaches Social Justice, the wealthy almost always put their selfish needs based on greed above those of their fellow human beings.

are getting shafted, along with social justice.

Free helpful hint for next time:
Just because a political candidate is GREEDY and appeals to you on the basis of greed and spite, doesn't mean you will actually see any benefit if he's elected. Surprise, Surprise, GREEDY people almost always bear (copious) false witness, too!

(Old W.C. Fields had something when he said, You can't cheat an HONEST man.)

5. Unfortunately, the Catholic vote "split" ...
... as did the rest of the country. I voted with the moral issues of social and economic justice, the just war concept ...

6. in laws didnt vote because of the social issues
they have two gay sons and couldnt reconcile voting for repug. and that is all that they are. so first time in their very respoonsible life time they didnt vote. devout catholics, they had to walk away from a lifetime of a chuch they love, because they cannot reconcile their sons being evil, per church

7. Sadly, many voted for the person they were told to vote for
by the media, and in many cases by the Church. The majority of voters don't really know why they vote the way they do. They're just "drinking the sand".
The discussion of why people voted the way they did always reminds me of a scene from The American President.
Also, the election was stolen, but that's a different topic.

From an 11/ article by Stephen Mitchell.

The consequence of a misinformed American electorate is illustrated in the movie, "The American President", starring Michael Douglas. Douglas plays Andrew Shepherd, a Wisconsin liberal up for re-election but unwilling to engage his Republican rival, Senator Bob Rumson (Richard Dreyfuss), in a character debate. Consequently Shepherd's approval ratings fall as Rumson's rhetoric pummels him. Lewis Rothschild (Michael J. Fox), the President's Domestic Advisor, finally tells Shepherd in a heated debate that, "People want leadership, Mr. President, and Rumson's the only one doing the talking. People want leadership, and in the absence of genuine leadership they'll listen to anyone who walks up to the microphone. They want leadership. They're so desperate for it that they'll swim in a mirage in the desert, and when they find there's no water, they'll drink the sand."

Shepherd looks at Rothschild a moment and replies, "Lewis, we've had beloved Presidents who couldn't find a coherent sentence with two hands and a flash light. They don't drink the sand because they think it's water. They drink the sand because they don't know the difference."

8. A majority of Catholics in blue states voted for Kerry while a majority
of Catholics in red states voted for *. What does that mean?

9. As much as I hate to say it
Edited on Sun Apr-03-05 07:20 PM by globalvillage
I think a lot of voters look at the map and said to themselves, "hey, I'm in a red state, I'm voting for *".
Seriously. I really think a majority of voters are sheep. I hate that they are, because it's killing us, but I believe it's true.

When I was door-knocking just days before the election, I asked * voters why they were endorsing *, and all I got were a bunch of stupid looks. I was talking to a Republican the other day, and he said he's a Republican because his parents are Republican, then he shrugged. And the guy's 40 years old and otherwise very bright.

Sheep.

10. My Catholic relation voted their pocketbook
And voted Democratic, just like they have for 50+ years. There's only one who MAY have voted Bush, on abortion.

11. I voted for the Catholic
I did not vote my pocketbook. I vote my conscience, always, and my conscience (and knowledge) said Kerry.

12. Social justice and pocketbook issues
were not mutually exclusive in 2004-thus my vote went to John F. Kerry.
