Woops, you're right! Well, I like Ketel One vodka. It calms me down after listening to the Chimp and his henchmen.

15. If depression runs in your family, please...
be careful with the alcohol! It's really easy to develop "momentum" with alcohol if you have a propensity for certain kinds of depression.

17. I quit that 15 years ago and haven't felt like curling up in the bathtub .
... since then. (That may sound funny to some, but it's close to the truth.)

20. I've been on Paxil for almost 10 years
it treats the depression, panic and OCD problems with which I live. And yes it has side effects, but after suffering with depression off and on for 30 years, I was and am willing to put up with them.

7. I took Prozac a few years ago, didn't work for me
But it turned out that the depression was caused by some Dietary supplements that I was taking. (Chromium Piccolinate,I don't think that's spelled right).

Once I stopped taking that, the depression lifted.:pals:

14. Yep..that's me
I've been depressed since my husband went to Iraq...he's been back a year and I still can't "shake" it.
The thing is, in the military, your spouse goes on meds and the command is told....like somehow "you're nuts" now and "need to be watched"...which is made even more insulting by the fact that women go to the doctor with minor stress (and I mean minor) in the military and doctors jump to put them on something....

it's like they want you on something....but then want to "tag" you for being on something ...

if that makes sense

10. I have been for years now
Just switched from paroxetine back to fluoxetine. (Generic Paxil to generic Prozac.) I am a long-term depressive, and meds are part of what keeps suicidal ideation under control.

12. Not anymore....
Used to take a "cocktail" of anti-depressants for a few years, that is, until I lost my job and health insurance.

Now, I medicate organically. Works just as well, if you ask me.

Although I have nothing against anti-depressants. I just think they are over-prescribed, but that's another conversation. Just make sure you are seeing a good psychiatrist with neuro-pharmacology experience.

Good luck. I hope you feel better.

16. I took Wellbutrin SR and trazadone a few years ago,
after the sudden deaths of my parents. I was on them for about 2-3 years, and they really helped. I took the Wellbutrin SR during the day, and the trazadone at night before I went to bed. One side effect of depression (i had been diagnosed with a major depression), is lack of sleep. I just couldn't sleep at night, and a side effect of the trazadone (also an anti-depressant) is sleepiness. It did help. I found originally that I couldn't sleep at night, and slept alot during the day. Cried all the time. Forgot everything. Appetite screwed up. But staying on the meds and seeking therapy, really helped me. I was on them for a couple of years, and then weaned myself off of them, under Dr's supervision. I didn't really have any of the side effects that you sometimes hear of, thank goodness. They did help if you need them.

22. I take Wellbutrin and Effexor.
If I wasn't taking these meds right now, I would be a freakin' basket case.

I have to say, taking these meds makes me feel a lot better than the "self medication " that I used to practice.

23. Lexapro here
I was taking an anti-psychotic too, forget the name. The anti-psychotic caused seizures/convulsions. It scared the shit out of my kids and wife (and me, for that matter). The SSRI, otoh, well, it helps. It creates problems with my boss, but it does balance me out.

24. I've been on Effexor for years.
It took a while to find the right drug. A lot of the antidepressants didn't work.
Be sure you get a thorough physical, including thyroid tests, done first. There are lots of physical causes of depression.

On the alcohol: it is an antidepressant, but a lot of people (especially men) use it to self-medicate. It doesn't work very well.

me on Zoloft. When he asked me when this round of depression started I said, November 2 when Bush was granted a second term.
