Conservative Christians Not Laughing at First Lady's Comedy Act
Hmmm, not submitting to her husband, isn't that a stonable offense?

WASHINGTON, DC—The First Lady may have stolen the show with her surprise comedy routine at the 91st White House Correspondents' Association Dinner, but not everyone appreciated her jokes and one-liners poking fun at President Bush. At least one organization of conservative Christians quickly lashed out at Mrs. Bush's performance, warning that her remarks at the President's expense were a public refutation of the Biblical command that wives should respect their husbands.

According to an official statement released over the weekend by the Coalition for Traditional Values, an organization that seeks a more flexible relationship between church and state, Mrs. Bush's jokes at her husband's expense amounted to a public emasculation of the President. Pastor Roy DeLong, the statement's author and chair of the group, warns that the First Lady's performance comes at a time when the Mr. Bush's "manliness is already under attack."

"As a believer, President Bush is no doubt familiar with the passage from Ephesians that says 'Wives, submit yourselves unto your husbands, as unto the Lord,'" says Mr. DeLong. "That means that just as Christ is the head of the church, the husband is the head of the wife.

That wives submitting to husband BS is all Paul's warped interpretation. Honestly, these people wshould call themselves Paulians, not Christians. When was the last time you heard one of them quoting the Sermon on the Mount?

And they don't care. They're like the old Hebrew National hot dog commercial. They answer to a higher calling.

Well, continuing to answer -- so publicly -- ONLY to their higher calling is quickly going to get them right back where they belong: out of politics.

I was thinking the same thing. "Gay cars"? "Homosexual energy agenda"? I didn't read the whole thing but my sense of it was that it wasn't serious. On the other hand it seems much too long for a joke. Brevity is the soul of wit, as they say. Articles like this, with links, and links within links, can be deceiving.

If he does run as a 3rd party candidate, he will pull the fundie vote, no doubt about it. That will be mighty nice for the left and terrible for the right.

15. Either way, this is a good thing
If it isn't a joke, then this is just another case where the fundie fringe shows their true, whack-job colors for all to see. Which is good, because it will weaken their support.

If it is a joke, the fact that it is based on such a (sadly) plausible scenario just accomplishes the above in a different way.

Keep making the headline you whack-jobs, it will just come around and bite you in the end...

62. You never grew up in a Southern baptist church did you?
Yes -it was written as a joke but there are a great many folks who ACTUALLY THINK LIKE THIS.

Little story:

My dad was an abusive alcholic. My mother went to our preacher for help. He quoted many of these verses to her - submit to your husband, he said, and be a better, submissive wife and your husband won't drink anymore.

If you guys think that this is entirely a joke, then you need to research on the internets a bit more.

Yes, this article is silly but it is based in fact. Scary fact, but still fact.

I have gay friends that are being denied their rights because of this "christian". I have a brother going over to fight next month also because of this "christian". When my friend repeatedly defended * because he's supposedly a religious man, it was too much to take.

39. I can't quite understand what she was trying to accomplish
with that standup routine. Did she finally go off the deep end, or was it an intentional line drawn in the sand?

For pickles to admit to watching Desperate Housewives and going to a Chippendales strip club, let alone saying her husband tried to milk a MALE horse...I think she must have been deliberately trying to embarrass *. Maybe she has finally had enough and wants him to know it?!

45. The thing about satire, is that it is supposed to be ironic,
Edited on Mon May-02-05 11:35 AM by spunky
and this isn't ironic. What's that group of Southern Baptist, The Promise Keepers or something that truly believe that wives should submit to their husbands. I mean this really could be true (even though its not). I could see some Promise Keeper-esque group truly having a problem with it.

Still funny though.

63. It may be a satire piece but I lived this growing up!!!!!!!

51. Vent spleen!
Ok, this I just gotta get off my chest. I thought of writing into my local conservative media even BEFORE I saw this story about Laura's hijinks at the annual Correspondent's Dinner - which only confirm my early morning epiphany - but I thought writing to this forum would be more satisfying.

So, I'm waking up to my - you got it, local conservative media (only station I can get on the radio in my bedroom - go figure), you know, the one that plays Rush Limbaugh and James Dobson ad nauseum all day and that crazy UFO guy at night. They run their usual morning snippets (ABC news) including Dr. Dean O'Dell (spelling?) and what is his topic of the day at 7 am, during the "get-the-kids-out-the-door" morning rush hour when one would expect MSM to be "safe": a quite graphic story on female sexual arousal. Now, as a lib, I'm all for frank, open discussion of all issues concerning sexuality, as one might expect, but come on! I swear I am becoming more and more confirmed these Christian moralists are actually a bunch of repressed adolescent types who never grew up and just want to keep "poo poo talk" in the headlines for their own twisted gratification!!!!

52. These wingnuts are really blurring the line between satire and
reality for me. I thought this was a brilliant satire, but it turns out they weren't kidding.

How dare she point out the obvious. On the other hand, if you read her "jokes" seriously they are pretty powerful refutations of this man's ability to lead. No wonder the wingnuts are angry. She pointed out his true character. They just hoped to defuse the obvious by turning it into a joke.If the fristian right are angry then we should be rejoicing: See below

"I spent 12 hours in the library a day. But we still met."=my husbands a complete idiot

89. It may be intended as satire, but it's very real.
I used to teach a "marriage enrichment" Sunday School class, and submission to a husband is rule #1 for the wife, plus all the other "virtuous woman" activities carried out by the gal in Proverbs (is it 41?). Pickles seems to fall a bit short. Never mind that her co-lump in the bed hardly fits Paul's description of an ideal husband; that's no excuse.

Betty Bowers might be a caricature, but there's an awful lot of women out there just like her.

96. this is all bullshit isn't it? NYC girl posted something about Drudge
getting punked by a fake story about Christian's "ostensible" reaction to Laura's comedy act.

Drudge Gets Finked Out!!!

On Friday, Matt Drudge educated C-SPAN viewers about the tricky nature of news in the Internet era: "What is happening is credibility is being called into play, of people making stuff up deliberately, finking people out, parody sites not really labeled as parody. There's a lot of confusion out there." Today, Drudge got fooled by a blogger parodying conservative Christians' ostensible reaction to Laura Bush's WHCD speech. If you ask us, though, the news here isn't that Drudge mistook a fake story for a real one -- it happens to everyone eventually. Much more notable, in our opinion, is that the famously MSM-biased citizen-journalist actually linked to a blog! It only lasted for a few minutes, but it's a start.

Conservative Critics of First Lady's Comedy Act Decry 'Hoax' Smear

Bushes_thumbA conservative Christian organization that lashed out at the First Lady's weekend comedy routine is lashing out again—this time at critics who claim that the group's Bible-based panning of Mrs. Bush's jokes and one-liners was itself a joke. Observers say that the high-profile dispute over who can speak for conservative Christians is just the latest in an increasingly heated battle between the Coalition for Traditional Values and its rival, the Traditional Values Coalition."
