Did your local paper carry the Bush fixed Iraq intel story?
And, if they did, HOW did they cover it?

The Charlotte Observer had it on the front page....YAY....but, they used a misleading headline - "Memo HINTS Bush made intel fit policy"

I called and complained that they covered up for Bush by lying in their headline when the memo clearly states that Bush WAS fixing the intel, and not that the memo was just hinting.

How did your paper do and how did you handle it?

WASHINGTON - A highly classified British memo, leaked in the midst of Britain's just-concluded election campaign, indicates that President Bush decided to overthrow Iraqi President Saddam Hussein by summer 2002 and was determined to ensure that U.S. intelligence data supported his policy.

The document, which summarizes a July 23, 2002, meeting of British Prime Minister Tony Blair with his top security advisers, reports on a visit to Washington by the head of Britain's MI-6 intelligence service.

The visit took place while the Bush administration was still declaring to the American public that no decision had been made to go to war.

"There was a perceptible shift in attitude. Military action was now seen as inevitable," the MI-6 chief said at the meeting, according to the memo. "Bush wanted to remove Saddam through military action, justified by the conjunction of terrorism and WMD," weapons of mass destruction.

The memo said "the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy."

10. It's important to know WHAT PAGE and the headline USED for the paper.
The headline at their website isn't always the headline they use for their actual papers. As shown by the Charlotte Observer example.

The WAY the papers handle this report will better indicate how the media, in general, will take this story.

9. Please insert the word "no" before "....weapons of mass destr....."
Thanks!

Interesting that word was omitted in the short summary on that search page.

From the actual article:

--snip

The memo said “the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy.”

No weapons of mass destruction have been found in Iraq since the U.S. invasion in March 2003.

The White House has repeatedly denied accusations it manipulated intelligence estimates to justify an invasion. It has pointed to the conclusions of two studies that cite failures by agencies in judging Hussein's weapons programs.

15. Columbus Dispatch had it on page A7.
But they used the "hint" fudge in the headline. I wrote the Managing Editor to complain. Here's my letter:

-----

Hello Joe -

Could you explain the headline that appeared in the Dispatch this morning reading "British memo hints that Bush made 'facts' fit his war plans"? Joe, have you read the memo? It does not "hint", it states that "the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy". This statement is in the body of the article itself.

Joe, Joe, say it ain't so. How in the wide, wide world did an outright statement in the article become a "hint" in the headline? Are we taking it easy on our president again? Is it because this exposes Bush to impeachment? Please be honest about this matter. Why mislead your readers in this way? I truly don't understand. We count on you for the truth, not Republican spin.

20. I have been watching and waiting
Today Knight Ridder picked up the story but they are the only ones I have found. Every day I google Mathew Rycroft to see if his name shows up in any major publication. (He is the author of the memo) Every day I write my local editor (Waco Tribune Herald A Cox Newspaper) reminding him the he is behind the curve on this one. I suggest the everyone write their local editor and ask why they are so slow to cover the "smoking gun memo"

The Spartanburg Herald Journal is a pathetic, wretched piece of garbage dedicated to promoting reaction in all of it's myriad forms. A complete waste of dirty rags and diseased pulpwood. It is low end Faux News. The editorial pronouncements are so drearily predictable as to not even effect my blood pressure any more. I have ceased LTTE's to them, they demand mega fact checking from me, while printing any kind of deranged bile that might occur to the fevered minds of our more degenerate citizens.

It is a New York Times affiliate, Bill O'Rielly, you asshole!
