My 1,000th post is dedicated to... Andy!

Wow, here it is, my 1,000th post. Only took me 3 years to get it. OK, I'm a bit slow, what can I say. As I was pondering what words of wisdom to write on this auspicious occasion, I thought of several topics. Bush? Iraq? Abortion? Social Security? A kitty thread in the Lounge? No. I want to talk about what I've witnessed in the past week in regards to Andy's fight to raise funds for his cancer surgery.

I don't know Andy, although I read all his posts religiously. When it was first mentioned about his cancer and lack of insurance, I started sending him money every payday, to help with his medical bills and living expenses. Andy has done SO much for all of us, I couldn't sit back and just let him die without a fight! Then, when crunch time came and it was announced Andy needed $25,000 within 2-3 days, I gave again. I'll give again next payday, to raise the other $17,000 he needs to pay for this surgery.

I saw the DU community pull together like I never have before. With all the fighting and squabbling that goes on in certain topics, *coughabortiongaymarriagereligioncough* I was astounded when we raised that 25K in 48 hours or so. I have been an activist for a very long time, and I have NEVER seen anything like that. Besides giving Andy a chance for life, I think it also did something for DU. It gave us HOPE. Hope that we are not just some nameless, faceless entity behind a computer screen who no one cares about. Hope that contrary to popular belief, we CAN make a difference. Hope that if we put as much energy into other issues as we did for Andy's cause, NOTHING COULD STOP US. Say it out loud. NOTHING COULD STOP US.

So next time someone asks you to help out for a worthy cause, before saying "I'm just one person, my help won't make a difference," stop and think of what we did and are continuing to do for Andy. WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

I urge everyone to donate to Andy to help him get his needed surgery. It's a matter of life and death.
