Bill would require parents to OK child's body piercing
Edited on Thu May-12-05 10:01 AM by Ernesto
Call me an old geezer, but this makes since to me.....
"State law requires children to get their parents' permission to obtain an aspirin at school, but not to get a two-inch, 12-gauge needle run through their tongue at a piercing shop."

3. Bad idea, really bad idea
Kids will start doing it themselves, or go to back alley piercing clinics. Think Hepatitis C, HIV, etc. Much better to have it done in places that are health inspected, use autoclaves, and have some degree of training.

4. You can't actually obtain aspirin at school
Not even with your parents premission. Where do you think they are going to get the money to pay for it?

6. Oh it's only four dollars a tablet, Rich Americans can handle that
We have the best health care in the world (if you have lots of money). And I was being facetious there about best health care. We don't even compete with Cuba let alone other bigger countries. You must go abroad if you want treatment involving stem cells and there is other (controversial) remedies that are not allowed in America. Can't take your money with you so might as well spend it on Aspirin

5. I don't like this
Sure, it's possible that a professional piercer might make a mistake, or the kid might not take care of it, correctly, leading to an infection. But something really disturbs me about this -- and I may be wrong -- but -- why body piercing? Why now?

I have recently been having a lot of nostalgia for the early 1990s, and I think that this may be an opportunity for somebody to stamp out counter-culture. What could be the impetus for this? Why more legislation to deal with BODY PIERCING, for god's sake? Is there an epidemic? Who's behind this authoritarian legislation?

Does this have more to do with whether the parents would "like," a piercing, or does it have to do with the safety of the child?
