76. I disagree, Murdoch KNOWS full well what he is doing
He is all about the DOUGH. If he could make money by being a screaming lefty news outlet and a screaming rightwing entertainment outlet, he'd do it. But rightwingers SUCK when it comes to entertainment--they just are NOT FUNNY. They are so full of themselves that they can only be sated with Faux News, like good little fascists.

It's always been this way with Faux--tits and ass, Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire, cheesy reality shows, edgy cartoons, and Afro-centric entertainment programming. Entertain the liberals on one side, while stroking the conservatives on his news arm.

No fool, that Aussie bastard. He plays both ends, without any shame.

49. How long would it take Homer Simpson to masturbate 8 Billion times?
Edited on Mon May-16-05 07:19 AM by IanDB1
Double-check my math on this:

If he did it once per day, from the day he was born, it would take him about 21,902,806.3 years.

Assuming Homer is about 50 years old, he would have to masturbate 160,000,000 times per year.

That would mean Homer Simpson masturbates 438,356.2 times per day.

Homer pleasures himself 18,264.8 times per hour.

Homer must be leaving a trail behind him, because he ejaculates 304.4 times per minute, or 50.7 times per second.

If a single male orgasm releases 1 teaspoon of "material," Homer would need to have a prostate the size of a watermelon just to get through a single day.

This is impossible!

However, I have a few theories on how it is possible that Homer masturbated 8,000,000,000 times.

Homer and the Time Machine
Remember the episode where Homer goes back in time about 6 Million years? In fact, I think this might have happened to him more than once.

It is possible that he spent 6 million years "catching up" with his current time period, and did not age until then. For a time, there would be two Homer Simpson's on Earth, until he re-locates then time machine and gets in it to fix the paradox. So Homer Prime would have: 50 years to masturbate, plus 6 Million more, plus 50 more until the time machine is built.

We can also include an extra 50 years for Homer #2 to masturbate and count toward the same total, if we want to be generous. So, Homer would have 6,000,150 years to masturbate 8,000,000,000 times. He'd only have to play with himself 1333.3 times per year, or 3.7 times per day.

Homer falls into the Third Dimension

Remember that episode where Homer is sucked into that strange 3-dimensional world with all the geometric shapes? It is possible that millions of years passed in Homer's subjective time while back in his home universe it was mere minutes. It is also possible that Homer didn't age during this time.

Animation Time Dilation

Television is shot at 30 frames/second.

We've already figured out that Homer masturbates 304.4 times per minute, or 50.7 times per second. That would mean he masturbates 1.7 times per frame.

This explains what Homer is doing during the time the animators draw each frame.

Double-check my math. I could be way off.

Matt was at Hidey Ho Comics (check spelling) in Santa Monica signing his comic about that zany rabbit, Binky: "Love is Hell" and my future husband and I said to one another, "This guy is going to be famous someday, he's just too witty". I still have that comic book, my husband's burned in the Topanga Fire in the early 90s (car and home too, sigh). The Simpons were just about to, or appearing at that time on "The Tracy Ullman Show". (She was just on The Daily Show, and she's as sharp and funny as ever)

36. Funny, but how bad is it if we need cartoon characters to voice our minds?
In struggling, educationally challenged South-America the only way to communicate social and political issues to the people is by acting it out in the popular soap operas.

Between South Park, King of the Hill and the Simpsons, one gets a better picture of the US from cartoons than from CNN, MSNBC and FOX combined.

want to face.

If there are issues needing to be faced that are difficult, in that we collectively really do not want to voice, then often times these issues are framed as humor.

You can see this happening in the funny papers also. Try reading the funnies each day for a few weeks. What will become apparent is there are issues in peoples minds that the editorial page and the headlines are reluctant to pursue.

This happened in the 60's and 70's too. Doonesbury, Lil' Abner to name a few from back then using current events to frame humor.

Humor is a pressure valve with us. As Simon and Garfunkel sang, "the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls". The funnies are the subway walls. As is the 'Simpsons'.

But why do the humorists write these things. Because that is why they are humorists, they know what people will find funny, they sense in some way what is troubling people and use these themes to make money by making jokes about what is troubling people. They are in a sense our 'prophets'.

It's really about us and our make-up, as humans. Why some things are 'funny'. What to watch for, is when it stops being funny, because that is when the riots will start, when the pressure valve gets stuck.

Walt Kelly managed to get some very subversive stuff into the strip. Even the innocuous "replacement" strips he did, for when newspapers refused to carry the regular Pogo strip, were done in such a way that readers knew he was being censored.

Edited on Mon May-16-05 12:24 PM by FighttheFuture
"and if you get kicked out of that one you're going straight in the army, where you'll be sent straight to Americas latest military quagmire. Where will it be? North Korea? Iran? Anythings possible with Commander Cuckoo-bananas in charge!"

An amazing episode!!

Still, getting rid of Bush and the Rethuglican majority is only the fist step. Attitudes must change. Progressive social causes must be pushed. people must be educated, not continually dumbed down.

Homer says, gotta go see this Commander Cuckoobananas!

Homer... Waiting his turn...

He looks outside the window and sees Bush and Tony Blair with each other...

Waits a little longer and then bumps into Tony Blair... Tony says, you just missed him. Go out to the parking lot! He's on his way out!

George Cuckobananas Senior says, "Sorry, he just left!"

Homer, oh well, still have to wait to see Commander Cuckoobananas!

57. How bout Flanders saying...
When his new town was trying to get him to remove his mustache, Flanders said something like, 'They can't tell me what to do, it's my body and my choice' - an obvious comparison to the pro-choice argument.

Last night's episodes were very pro-Democratic and anti-religious right. I loved it.

That one and also the episode with mary bobbins, the following dialog:

Lisa: Mom's sacrificed so much for us. We should all sacrifice something for her. I'll start by giving up my malibu stacey collection.

Bart: And I'll take up smoking, and give that up

Homer: awww, I'm proud of you son, quitting smoking is one of the hardest things you could ever do. Here's a dollar

Lisa: Dadddddd, but he didn't dooooo anything!

Homer: Didn't he lisa, didn't he......

Then there's also this episode, when bart gives away santa's little helper:

Homer: So you could either sit here crying over your lost dog over a bowl of dog food, and keep eating dogfood until your tears taste like dogfood and the dog comes back, or you could go out there and find him!

Bart: You're right! I'm going out there to get my dog!

Homer: sighhhhhhh, damn, I almost had him eating dogfood!

First episode: GABF15 - Home Away From Homer - Written by Joel H. Cohen

It doesn't have the second writer listed yet on the page I get my simpsons info www.snpp.com but I think I remember the writer being Matt Warburton. Don't take me on that though.

And of course, Al Jean, executive producer and head writer from Season 13 to present, co-executive producer seaons 3 and 4.

I'm a simpsons nerd. I have the writing staff practically memorized. Spend nearly as much time at a simpsons forum as I do here on DU. :-)

though this season of 24 has been a bit more "right wing" in sentiments than previous seasons were. The second season especially appeared to be damning Bush's policies. I have a feeling that there's a lot more entrenched management in the studio part of Fox outside of the Fox News portion that aren't as willing to be Rupert Murdoch or Roger Ailles punching bags.

I wonder how many more times you need to shout it in this thread until you feel satisfied that we understand :eyes:

Listen, we (those who agree) get what you are saying, we (those who agree) just simply find it generally to be an absurd assessment of reality.

But once again, Yayyyyy for you for thinking outside the box and coming up with the least likely scenario to equal reality. Hey, come to think of it Commander Cuckoo Bananas has done that a few times too. Ya know, like thinking the least likely scenario of killing tons of Muslims, taking away their freedoms, lying about why, stealing their oil, and invading their land equals the best way to spread freedom and liberty?

So yayyyy for you, free thinker. :toast:

I'll lighten up if you will.

Take it up with the rest of the celebratory posters in this thread, because YOU WIN!

It's not like Matt Groening's politics aren't really well known, but have at it--you beat me.

Congratulations and welcome to DU.

Damn you are getting bent out of shape and attacking other DU members over the Simpsons, yikes.

It was funny, people like Homer, and some view him as the everyday American. I would rather have people quoting Homer Simpson than Rush Limbaugh anyday.

Flamebait, or whatever you want to call it. Homer had a fun quote, that's all, nothing more, nothing less. It's not a sad day in leftworld or whatever you called it. People like Homer, and liked his quote.

There are many posts, and other things in this world you can flex all your intellectual energy at, but this? Cmon.

157. Talk about overcompensating
Quoting: All I have done is asked you to consider something that you have not considered (like a REAL progressive). I have yet to have one poster say 'yeah, you could look at it that way, because the statement is ridiculous', instead I get people claiming the statement is coherent and that they share Homer Simpsons point of view.

----------------------------------------------------------------

and....it was a funny quote. This being Democratic Underground, with Democratic being the operative word, yeah, they share Homer Simpson's point of view with this quote.

I know you're 19 threads into this DU, so don't be so hasty to judge this site as not intellectually stimulating. There is a lot of great stuff here from LBN to political support groups to an Editorial Discussion Group and more. Many times people post action items and see them through. We (REAL-progressives, whatever that means) indulge in this silly stuff and we get into the harder topics too.

The differentiating clue is, if it involves Homer Simpson, it's going to be a silly post. Don't take it too hard and start a flame war because you think we are in a sad state of affairs for quoting a cartoon.

Oh, relax and welcome to DU.

173. Hey folks, don't engage these people...
ignore them! All they want to do is stir the pot, which proves what the plaid adder is saying about their still being angry despite winning the election and having control over virtually all the government. Besides, how pathetic is it for someone to spend so much time in a website dominated by people they despise. It's like having an anti-Celine Dion (or anti-anything) website. Why would you put so much time and effort into something you hate??? That's as pathetic as it gets!!!

178. There was actually some room for debate.
I don't know if you saw the deleted posts, but there were some points worth ferreting out.

But in the end, the departed Duer was most likely a RW "activist" attempting damage control, because the Simpsons are MAJORLY HUGE!

The funniest part was when he wrote that you shouldn't explain what you are, but let your posts speak for themselves.

This while saying how far left he is, member of Sierra Club, ACLU, blah, blah, blah...

131. Parody is funny.
"What will it be next, North Korea, Iran, Who knows? Anything's possible with mr. cuckoobananas in charge!"

While true, that isn't funny.

On the other hand, Homer running around yelling 'U-S-A!! U-S-A!!' in response to something he saw on TV is both wholly fictional, and funny.

151. Homer: the accidental intellectual. He 's always been one.
Edited on Mon May-16-05 10:00 PM by Kurovski
the character of Homer Simpson has chanted "USA, USA!" in past episodes. People are free to interpret the context in which he did so.

The statement made in the recent episode is a bold and bald one. if "regular" guy Homer can see the writing on the wall, it's only because it's written in large neon letters, and many Americans wake to realize that obviousness.

Homer is also expressing concern for his own son becoming embroiled in such an undertaking as the Bush wars, actually, more of a warning. Not to go too deep with all this. I can think of only one reason why you would want to muddy the waters on this one. Otherwise, it seems you've come to lord it over us for our inability to recognise layers of humor in parody and satire. We already know that we're reactive and jumpy over this administration. It's particularly touchy times for those of small economic means.

While you write of your concern that the left here is behaving like the Right, you go ahead and take part in the sport of freeps, baiting nervous, upset and yes, insecure people. Maybe you don't have to worry about money and health care. Perhaps you don't have family in the military, or military age children. Perhaps you do.

Some people become edgy when times get this fucking shitty.

Mockery is an important tool for a Democracy to keep itself free when faced with an erosion of rights and citizen's power.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x3666577

Bush was indeed called a name in this episode. So be it. it can serve as a parody of Liberals as well, so be that. I have seen other political jokes on The Simpsons that can go either way.

Court jesters kept their heads by saying things no one else could by couching it as a joke. I THINK that's what you mean.

Homer's statement is over the top and couched in an irrational manner, and he is reacting with exasperation to his son's dwindling options in life, but it contains truth in it.

The Simpsons can keep Murdoch off their back by keeping it open to interpretation. This has been discussed before at DU.

171. THE WISDOM OF HOMER SIMPSON

Homer: And Lord, we are especially thankful for nuclear power, the cleanest, safest energy source there is. Except for solar, which is just a pipe dream. <7F07>

Homer: I want to share something with you: The three little sentences that will get you through life. Number 1: Cover for me. Number 2: Oh, good idea, Boss! Number 3: It was like that when I got here. <7F11>

Marge: It's not like you go to museums or read books or anything.
Homer: You think I don't want to? It's those TV networks, Marge: they won't let me. One quality show after another, each one fresher and more brilliant than the last. If they only stumbled once, just gave us thirty minutes to ourselves, but they won't! They won't let me live! <1F20>

Homer: My campaign is a disaster, Moe. I hate the public so much. If only they'd elect me, I'd make them pay. <5F09>

They trounced Clinton a few times, for the sex stuff and then there was the episode which closed with the following exchange:

Bill Clinton: Thank you, Lisa, for teaching kids everywhere a valuable lesson: If things don't go your way, just keep complaining until your dreams come true.
Marge: That's a pretty lousy lesson.
Bill Clinton: Hey, I'm a pretty lousy president.

It is interesting to note that Lisa's lesson is pretty much the modus operandi for the Republican party even though they're in control of EVERY BRANCH OF THE GOVERNMENT!

And then there's Mayor Quimby who has evolved into an icon of generic politics itself.

The Simpsons mostly takes the current administration to task and has always hit Republicans the hardest--which if you're brave enough to do it in our well-cultivated Brownshirt-ian atmosphere--is like shooting fish in a barrel.

The Simpsons has the characters of Corporate overlord Mr. Montgomery C.Burns, RW radio host Birch Barlow, hapless criminal Sideshow Bob, Ahnuld knock-off Rainier Wolfcastle and the lovably honest Flanders with which they regularly evicserate today's Republican Party.

And didn't Cletus, the slack-jawed yokel, name one of his young'uns "Condoleeza"?

Maybe you're thinking of "King of the Hill"? But they mostly stick to slamming simperingly hypocritical ecology teachers, and permissive parents, which I also enjoy.

After Hank Hill had a personal crises during election 2000 in which he reconsidered voting for Bush because he expierienced a limp handshake from George at a rally, we haven't really heard much.

Do you suppose Jeff Gannon taught George that handshake?

Kurovski, oh girlene! You SSSSSSSSTOP!
