Bible study = better SAT scores???
In a discussion at a baby shower this weekend my own mother mentioned this. I have no idea where she got this from but my stepfather watches Fox News constantly (and takes it seriously) so I figured it had to be from there. I searched their website and nothing came up. This might be the result of one of those e-mails she sometimes sends me and I have to take 5 seconds to search and debunk (you know like the Gold Star mothers and Hillary type stuff).

I worry about the woman.

My wife and I talked about it on the way home:
-My wife thought "then the test needs to be changed. Knowledge of the Bible shouldn't help you nor should not knowing the Bible should hurt you" I completely agree-BTW my wife is a life long (until she met me) Baptist church attending Christian but is scared to hell of what is going on recently.
-I told my wife that I think someone took the joke e-mail about SAT's (posting at least twice in the lounge) and twisted it into proof of their point of view.

I did a quick search and found these two articles

New SAT Questions Replace Evolution with Creation
http://swiftreport.blogs.com/news/2004/12/new_sat_questio.html
When a new version of the Scholastic Aptitude Test goes into effect this month, students attending schools in districts that have phased out the teaching of evolution will no longer be forced to answer questions about the controversial theory. Instead, they'll be tested on their knowledge about the six days in which God created the earth and the great flood that took place 4,300 years ago.

1. The Swift Report is a satirical site
It's a funny article, but it's bogus (in a satiric way). I have to say that the writing is quite authentic.

No harm, no foul. Well, maybe on Bush and Co.

2. One thing
Kids who read the Bible are still reading. Parents who read the Bible to their children are reading to their children. It may not be ideal from some of your points of view - but I should think that some of that might help.

3. Uhh...the Swiftreport is a more subtle form of Satire
Just look at the 1st entry today:

http://swiftreport.blogs.com/news/

According to a recent poll, the majority of Americans fear activist judges more than any other single threat, including toxic mold, illegal aliens, alien abduction or North Korea. The poll also found that most Americans feel far more threatened by activist judges today than they did this time last year.

4. There is some truth behind it
Studies have shown that if somebody reads for 30 minutes to one hour a day that his intelligence and test score increase. The funny thing is that it is not even that relevant what they are reading as long as it stimulates your mind, so a bible would increase the test scores. However if you watch TV your test score and intelligence decreases so Fox News watching stepfather would perform less.

5. Whether the kid reads Mark Twain, Stephen King or the Bible
doesn't matter. The likely fact would be that the more a kid reads, the better they will do on the SAT. It doesn't matter what they read as long as they read. It will only help their comprehension.

6. Oh I think I see where this came from then (thanks all)
Someone inserted "the Bible" into a sentence about just reading more. Gee no editorializing there huh?

7. You gotta understand how some people think
No matter what it is, if its a positive thing, reading the bible will help you. Praying will help you. They'll make the argument about anything. If there is any link between reading the bible and SAT scores its probably more to do with the time spent reading. I'm sure there is a link between time spent reading period and SAT scores.

8. The idea that knowledge of the Bible is somehow related to ..
professional and personal and collegial success has been making the rounds lately on the religious reich websites.

Let's see:
I have a ..
Bachelor's in Business,
a Master's in Psychology, and a
Juris Doctor.

My hubby has ..
a Bachelor's in Engineering,
a Master's in Engineering,
a Master's in Business Administration, and
a Juris Doctor (law degree).

We both have very little knowledge of the Bible, and it really hasn't affected us one way or the other, and I would call us successful as to the above categories.

So much for that theory having credibility to me.

I never heard the Bible mentioned in any college or university or law school class (other than in certain Constitutional Law classes in a particular case), and neither has my hubby/spouse.

I hope you are kidding about that SAT thing.

9. Well, all those archaic words probably don't hurt
Edited on Mon May-16-05 06:29 PM by LeftyMom
provided one is reading an older version, and not one of the newer dumbed-down ones with the flat prose.

Reading anything written in something other than standard American English probably has a similar effect.
