George Allen (R-VA) is a dangerous man.
Virginians know it, but the rest of the country needs to figure it out pretty fucking quickly! He cultivates a bullshit "aw shucks" "regular guy" demeanor; but he is in reality a fringe-dwelling wingnut. He is also, by many accounts, the front runner for the '08 repug presidential nomination. In Virginia he ran against Senator Chuck Robb, a decorated combat veteran whom Allen tarred as "soft on defense" and well left of the mainstream. Sound familiar? (And trust me, only in Virginia could a right-leaning centrist like Chuck Robb be described as "far left".) Allen campaigned as a supporter of the assault-weapons ban and then voted against it the first chance he got. He promised a policy of "reasonable moderation" with regard to abortion, yet he has voted to curtail a woman's right to choose in every instance that has come before him. He has been a staunch supporter of even the most radical of the Bush appointments and/or nominations. Don't let this bastard slip along under the radar, folks. He is a genuinely scary individual.

1. I agree he COULD be very dangerous.
He isn't right this second, because he does need to develop quite a bit nationally. But you're absolutely right - we can't let him continue to slip under the radar.

2. Will he be our first real fascist, I've been wondering.
Although * is really bad, he is still somewhat constrained by the norms and forms of democracy. I can't see * actually waving off the democratic forms...he just saps at them until they are empty of all meaning. Allen, on the other hand, I could see declaring a state of emergency and evaporating our Republic in an instant. Am I wrong here?

3. I doubt that he will run for President
He would never win. He's very unpopular and not personable. He's really an obnoxious guy (like his father). Mark Warner would kick his ass for either office (Senator or President).

8. They run for President to position themselves for the VP slot
He increases his national exposure, and if he has enough of a following and cash from supporters, he goes on the ticket in the number two slot, especially if the prime candidate is in need of some regional balance.

4. Okay
So this only proves that Virginia has its share of stupid people as well.

The only hope is that they vote for his opponent when the time comes, and that they remember that he lied. But I wouldn't count on it.

7. He's also one smug son-of-a-bitch.
He was so horrible on that Nightline town-hall meeting on the war a few months ago. It was one of the few times I've ever felt the desire to personally smack someone upside the head.

He could be very dangerous, I agree, but I think his unapologetically arrogant demeanor will be a big turn off if he goes for a presidential run...but then again, look who's leading the country now. :scared:

9. Yep - does seem like the new GOP Pres Candidate Blueprint
1. Although you are filthy rich, present yourself as an aw shucks "drink a beer with" guy.
2. Get a faux ranch. (I'm assuming Allen has something like this in VA)
3. Diminish any of your beltway experience.
4. Push how much of a Christian you are.
5. Have a handful of "moderate" positions to hide your RW credentials.

10. He's getting more and more face time on cable teevee because he
parrots White House talking points to the letter.

Allen, however, comes off as an extermely biased doofus and he doesn't do well when challenged by ANY Democrat.

15. And, he hired Thune's campaign manager apparently
for 2006. Planning for a very bloody campaign if the Dems come up with someone to run against him. If it's not Warner, just can't conceive of who would run.

is when there has been someone in the military and had served and they get labeled like Kerry "soft on defense" how the fuck do people not notice how wrong that is?! And then the challenger never been to combat is tough on defense? These people make me wanna scream.

19. I call him "Let them eat cake Allen":
Senator George Allen (R-VA) on Meet the Press, May 1.
On private accounts, he suggested that

AMERICANS MIGHT HAVE TO SELL THEIR HOMES TO SURVIVE IN RETIREMENT.

In fact, he was trying to reassure people who are uncomfortable about investing in the stock market with private accounts. So, he recognized that those who do, might reduce their retirement savings in the event of a market downturn But, he thinks allowing your own home to be your investment would get around that.

ALTHOUGH, IT WOULD FORCE YOU TO SELL IT WHEN YOU RETIRE IN ORDER TO FEED YOURSELF.

20. Frist Vs. Allen...Popcorn Anyone?
Why help them? Let's puff up all their balls. I mean, this country needs a good hack quack like Bill Frist, or another wonderkid of privilidge like George Allen. Yep, we want these paragons of polyester and bullshit...or at least they need to keep hearing this in their overblown heads.

Allen's trying to trump Frist with the Bolton fiasco and, if the wingnuts bitch about Schummer or Biden never missing a photo-op, this guy puts them to shame. He's like dogshit...all over the place and stinkin' up the neighborhood.

I'm kinda liking what I'm seeing on the Repugnican side of the aisle in the Senate. There are some real big egos that are all trying to puff up their balls. Not just Allen and Frist, but Hagel, McConnell, Kyl and Lott. This "nuke klee ur" showdown could just unleash some of the big ego atoms from these overblown pie holes.
