MSNBC calls it a PARTIAL retraction!!
KABUL - The firestorm of anger continued Monday over Newsweek’s handling of a story that alleged U.S. interrogators desecrated the Quran as Muslim leaders and the Bush administration both blasted the magazine’s partial retraction of the piece.

And in the "I went there so you wouldn't have to" department, foxnews.com has part of this evening's statement from newsweek...

"Based on what we know now, we are retracting our original story that an internal military investigation had uncovered Koran abuse at Guantanamo Bay," editor Mark Whitaker said in a statement released Monday evening.

Nota bene, the wording is very specific..."retracting our original story that an internal military investigation had uncovered Koran abuse..."

They aren't denying the Koran abuse, they're denying that an internal military investigation uncovered it.

Just sayin', is all...

3. I've seen several different spellings in the print media...
...I'm not so sure anymore.

They ask sort of the same question in Muslim countries...

"Is it 'bible' or 'bull$hit'? I've seen it spelled both ways."

6. Neither is definitive.

The word was originally written in a different alphabet, and so it's up to the individual to decide how to tranliterate it most accurately. I think Koran is more common that Quran, although whether that means its ore accurate I don't know.

Any views on the correctness of moslem/muslim, anybody?

5. foxnews partially confirms newsweek story?
from that foxnews article you linked to:

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,156612,00.html

While the Pentagon denies uncovering any information whatsoever about the allegations, Justice Department officials told FOX News that they shared a report with Defense about one such incident.

In the summer of 2002, a Guantanamo prisoner told an FBI agent that an interrogator there flushed the Muslim holy book down the toilet. The FBI did not confirm the allegation, but passed a report containing the detainee's statement to the Department of Defense, Justice Department officials said.
