4. Of course it did. This isnt really news.
The news isnt the whitehouse pressure, it is the pentagon changing its story.

The White House is really pushing the envelope here.
They're such Bastards. This whole thing stinks so
bad it's scary, either they put the story out and
are using it to Slaughter what's left of the free press,
ie. Newsweek or they're controlling the free press by
intimidation. Very Scary Shit. Damn them, Bastards!

6. Ding, ding! You hit the nail on the head.
Also, on the evening news, they said Newsweek sent the Pentagon a copy of the story, and they did not deny anything.

So if that's true, they had a chance to stop the story before it went to print.

16. The damage is done ....
It really isn't significant if Mr. & Mrs. John Smith in Pleasantville think, "Gosh, that radical media erred again!" What matters is the truth has gotten out, and is making the rounds in the Islamic world. You can't put a genie back in a bottle, Karl Rove.

35. Not Really The Point Of This Little Maneuver Though
They could care less about the genie or the Islamic reaction, this is all part of the next stage of press intimidation: Newsweek's irresponsible journalism is responsible for deaths and violence, therefore, the gov't will now have to step in and monitor/censor/approve the news. They will say "We didn't want to, but this type of irresponsible reporting is dangerous and becoming all too common, therefore, we must step in and do something about it.

17. Well, no fucking shit!
Newsweek and CBS aren't podunk operations. If they air something, it *has* been checked and double checked. Even if it's just a story about the runaway bride. Retractions are generally of the "Ms. Miller's name is actually Mr. Frankenschtel" variety.

32. See Brotherjohn's thread on DU dissecting those posters.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x3666986

The signs read: "Newsweek deserves to be banned" and "Bush should apologise for desecration of the Quran".

For starters, the signs look WAY to uniform and manufactured... it's as if some PR firm made them for the protestors.

Now, the signs say "Raza Academy" in small print at the bottom, which a quick Google finds is is an institution in Bombay (Mumbai), India, founded "for the sole purpose giving Islamic Knowledge to children and youngsters as well as old people". (http://www.razaacademy.com/aboutus.html )

I'm sure they are capable of producing the signs if they felt the need to. But the strangest thing is, why would they be calling to Newsweek to be banned?? I'd think their ire would be aimed straight at Bush. But angry at Newsweek for "betraying" their enemy?

THINK about it. If they believed this to be true, why would they be mad at Newsweek for reporting it?! I'd think they'd be happy Newsweek brought it into the open!

Excellent points brought out in the thread.

26. Some of you may find this hard to belive but there was a time....
when the media reported true news and kept their employees. NOT like today when you report true stories they fire you but when you report false stories you are rewarded by the government. No, seriously, I know people who will flame me because they do not believe me. The media used to constantly report the truth and not have to retract it.

One more comment on this sad state of affairs. I think the * regime is sadly mistaken if they think this will change anything. They can not be thinking, "Oh no, the American people will be upset." No, they are not worried about the sheeple and nor should they be.

The regime is scared of foreigners and their reaction to this news. Think about it, it was admitted that they saw the release beforehand. They knew it would just be another article down the memory hole in the grand place that used to be America. What they did not think about is the international reaction. You mark my words, no retraction from Newsweek will change their reactions.

I honestly think they have gone ahead and really messed up our international relations as well as the occupation. So you know who is reacting violently to this news? All of the nations in the area of, and including, Iraq. If everyone so wished, they could easily surround our troops and destroy them. Think of it, Iraq being an illegal occupation is enough of an insult to these people but add in this insult to one and all and if you thought we were fighting 'insurgents' before, you have seen nothing yet.

This is nothing the regime can hide from the world. * does not have followers in other countries. They do not worship false Gods. He can not simply use misdirection on these folks. He can not say mea culpa and do a retraction, they are much smarter than the average American. Even shurbs man ate, the Arab prince, will not be soothed by hand holding over this matter.

This could be very bad for us and no matter what Americans say about fraternity pranks or it is just some words on paper, their ignorance will not be excused by these other people worldwide. If an ignorant American thinks it is no biog deal, his thinking will not stop more bloodshed on our people. You can not insult everyone in this manner and expect them to play by your rules and what you think should be offensive or torture. That is the reason we were already losing in Iraq. We went over playing the war by our rules when we are on their home territory and they are playing by theirs. We have never understood this and THAT is why we have lost so many good people. Our ignorance and arrogance will be what finally causes our downfall.
