United Employees Prepare To Strike...Bad News

Snip....While we still hope to reach an agreement with the company, Local Lodge Strike Committees should be prepared to have the membership immediately walk off the job and onto picket lines if the judge rules against us on United's motion to terminate our collective bargaining agreements........end

10. No, the judge directed the PBGC to absorb the pension liability
Which means that retirees will get less money, versus no money.

UAL is bankrupt. There is no hidden money to be tapped. It's all gone, and has been for years.

A strike will profoundly alienate customers already nervous about UAL. No one wants to get stuck with a ticket they can't fly on. When customers go to another airline, many of them won't come back.

A strike will produce only a Pyrrhic "victory." There are no great options here for workers. If I was a UAL employee I'd be looking for another job.

Peace.

11. A national strike is one of the few methods left for the US populace.
It would likely take a nationally recognized Democratic leader with actual guts to properly organize, however so don't hold your breath.

5. I listened to Nate Clay's Chicago call-in --- people were afraid
Not just UAL employees. People from other airlines, CTA, unrelated businesses.

They were afraid, bigtime!

8. They are all so screwed. They might as well
fuck over the company while they have a chance to do it. How easy will it be for the airline to replace them? I would think it would be difficult, considering all the safety training that has to go on. Of course, I bet they get a reprieve from safety inspections from the US govt.

If I'm missing something here, please let me know. I fully admit that I don't understand all the nuances of what is going on here.

24. I'm having a hard time with this.
I'm having a difficult time with one interpretation of this concept that the women employees need to strip (even tastefully) to raise money and consciousness for this issue. I want the focus on the issue, not the bared bodies. I think bared bodies are a distraction from the issue.

16. I support UAL employees & think they got shafted big time....
...I just hope they strike after I leave next week for Hawaii....:eyes:

Seriously...I support them all the way...I had already been planning on sitting on my flight to Maui and tell them that they got screwed and encouraging them to strike....I cannot believe what was just done unto them....

And selfishly, I do hope they strike AFTER I'm in Hawaii....then I'll just stay there until they stop striking...

17. relax, the system will adjust
There's just no downside to a strike anymore.
The airline industry has huge overcapacity.
Other airlines will add flights, to the same or
similiar routes to those of United.
A week later, nobody will notice that United is gone,
except maybe Chicago.
United is easily replaced.

18. Tell United's WORKERS to relax!
Sorry about your pensions, after all these years of supporting the Company Line. Too bad, so sad. Delta will pick up those flights, but not your pensions.

No dammit, those people made a DEAL with UAL, with their blood, sweat and tears, and they just got fucked and you tell everybody to "relax." Relax, my ass. If UAL can do it, so can every other Corporate Bastard in this sorry Union.

19. the workers are former owners, United was employee owned in '00
from 1995 till 2000, or so, United ws majority-owned by
its employees.
Not sure what happened since.
The workers, might as well be striking against themselves.
Maybe they will be able to get
a new job with Cheech and Chong Airlines.

The ignore button works better.

After all, your concern isn't the workers anyway.

Only that the system "adjusts", so you don't have to worry about it.

I guess we can all "relax."
