Basic game theory teaches that a tit-for-tat, compromise strategy is almost always the optimum for both sides reaching their best achievable outcomes.

A my-way-only approach is the absolute best if the other side almost always caves. The Repugs have learned that the Democrats almost always cave, so they have adopted and won big with a take all tack. The Repugs look stronger to the public, since the Democrats are always trying to find a way to appease them.

The only way, game theory shows, to end a "take all" opponent's actions is to respond in kind and NEVER back down. Eventually the opponent realizes that what is happening is leading to worse outcomes for him, so he moves towards tit-for-tat.

I really doubt the Democrat will ever take the stand necessary to curb the Repugs. They are unified, we are fragmented. Our chain has way too many weak links (and fools believing tit-for-tat is still at play).
