Anorexic student denied valedictorian title
Some times it is tough to be from Texas. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7884243/?GT1=6542 A high school student is being denied honors as valedictorian because she was treatment for the first couple of weeks of her junior year. The school district is punishing this girl for being sick. The rule is to prevent people from transfering in and that was not the case here. There is a poll that is worth DUing on whether this girl should be named valedictorian. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7885754/

1. I know I'm not smart enuf to be a skool administerater
But didn't the school effectively admit that the girl was enrolled by requiring her to prepare and submit her school work while she was away, as well as accepting and grading it?

2. Well if she didnt meet the requierments...
then she shouldnt be valedictorian.

Yes the requierments are completely arbitrary but they are the requirements.

IMO I dont really care, its just a stupid title with little meaning.

If you are smart you dont need a title to tell yourself you are smart.

8. Except that state government cannot impose arbitrary regulations
because of the judicial recognition of substantive due process. Don't get me wrong. I'm not sure whether or not she has a valid claim, but she does have severable potentially colorable grounds for attack.

That's awful. Next they'll be denying people valedictorian status because they have OCD or dyslexia.

4. Ridiculous.
She was doing her classwork at the time, so how is it that she wasn't "enrolled"? Clearly, this is a case of fresh concrete thinking quickly turning into a bizarro world of cracked sidewalk.

And isn't it wonderful to see school administrators stigmatize this incredibly painful and difficult to treat disease?

Ugh.

:(

10. And how sad she was denied validictory status
which should have been her "happy ending" karmic reward for overcoming physical and psychological adversity.

7. I got ripped off from being named valedictorian too
Chorus students could take a class during their lunch period senior year; I couldn't. Therefore, my competition had a higher demoninator.

Life is tough; wear a helmet.

12. Not my child or related to me in any way
I do not know this child. I was simply offended at the concept that a school district would do this.

This just hit me as another reason why it is difficult to live in Texas.

14. Young lady decided not to sue school district
I think that the she has a great claim under the ADA and under federal laws. A group offer to represent her for free and she passed up the opportunity. She is accepting a honorary award in lieu of being the real valedictorian http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/metropolitan/3186938 This young lady has a tremendous amount of class.
