Stealth Recruiting Ad Sparks Criticism

By Nathaniel R. Helms

The U.S. Navy has pulled out all the stops to recruit hard-to-reach candidates using classified ads in newspapers across the country offering jobs as postal workers with "excellent pay & benefits" for high school graduates who respond to a toll-free "800" telephone number.

What has a number of critics seething is that the ads do not mention the Navy at all, or that the telephone number connects inquiries to a Navy recruiting team manning a nationwide telephone bank, a DefenseWatch inquiry has learned.

1. "Must relocate" would be a giveaway - but I think it's
unfair, too. They must be getting desperate - ads that don't mention the name of the employer always used to be frowned upon and with good reason.

3. The Navy has been doing this for years.
It's nothing new. Blind ads are a useful tool in recruiting. When applicants call, they tell them it's Navy. Many companies use blind ads. How often have you replied to an employment ad and found out it was a head hunter? That's basically what these ads are. You're calling a Navy head hunter.
