He at first wanted to rename the mountain Mount Reagan... :eyes: Satan/Reagan, yeah, that works.

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY
One man's campaign to rename Mt. Diablo
But he'll have devil of a time changing it to Mt. Kawukum

- Leslie Fulbright, Chronicle Staff Writer

The bucolic views of Mount Diablo have created a living hell for Art Mijares.

The Oakley man, who can see Contra Costa's highest peak from his living room, is on a campaign to rid the mountain of the name it has held for 164 years, because diablo means devil in Spanish.
"This is not a hoax, it's a God thing," Mijares said. "Our main icon is named after the devil."

Although he doesn't have a problem with deviled eggs or Duke University's Blue Devils, he says it is profane to name a landmark after Satan. And he has taken his fight all the way to the federal government.

In October, the U.S. Board on Geographic Names will consider Mijares' proposal to change the name of the 3,849-foot mountain to Mount Kawukum, a name Mijares says is indigenous and means "laughing mountain, everywhere seen. " Others translate it differently.

3. Um... insert snarky fairy-tale comment here?
The things people choose to obsess about, once they've opted to confuse dusty old metaphors with reality. :eyes:

4. His first choice? "Mount Reagan"
The article also mentioned him leading "Royal Rangers" on camping trips to the accursed mountain. They're sponsored by the Assembly of God. http://royalrangers.ag.org/

Our Goals:

* To instruct in Bible Doctrine. When a boy participates in Royal Rangers, he should have a basic knowledge of what the Bible teaches.

* To challenge for Christian service. When a boy completes this program he should be ready to take his place in the area of Christian service where God wants him to be

* To inspire a belief in the fundamental beliefs of our church. When a boy completes this program he should be Christian in belief for the remainder of his life.

* To satisfy the boy's basic need for activity. A boy engaged in this program should have enough interesting activities to do to prevent him from being tempted to engage in unwholesome activities.

The Boy Scouts have a religious aspect, but nothing as blatant as these guys. (Not that I excuse BS homophobia.)

The ancestors of Mr Mijares--some of whom may have named the mountain--laughed at the Devil.

5. I guess he is no fan of the Duke Blue Devils, The Wake Forest Demon
Deacons, or the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Not to mention the Devil's Monument. I guess he doesn't eat deviled eggs or devil cake, either.
