What are your fave news sources, besides DU?
Assume I have limited time and want news sources that are as accurate as possible, as well as independent. What would your rank as your top 5?

(Maybe we should establish a running poll to this effect, if it could be publicized as a sort of consumer reports on news sources?)

4. American journalism is so wretched, I couldn't pick five.
But I do have seven-day-per-week e-mail service from Der Spiegel, The Washington Post and Tacoma's (venomously anti-union) local daily The News Tribune. I almost always read in full whatever links I find from The Christian Science Monitor and -- when I have time to watch or listen -- I very much appreciate PBS newscasting. Were I still living in NYC, I would read The Village Voice every week.

One paper I don't trust is The New York Times: it proved itself a shameless strumpet for the real estate scammers when it fired Sidney Schanberg in 1986 for legitimately criticizing the obscene greed of New York City's landlords. The paper thus revealed the truly craven extent of its profiteering amorality, and I have had no respect for it ever since.

6. NPR beats everything
Which is why I urge people to link to the following thread and sign the petition as Congress is moving to kill NPR and PBS!

12. are you serious????
npr is headed by bush appointees now.

they have been silent on the most important issues - election fraud, jeff gannon, DSM.

npr doesn't come close to touching the other news sources like Air America, Raw STory, Buzzflash, Bradblog, DU, free press.

if you think NPR is where it's at, with all due respect, wake up and smell the roses here:

peace out

13. Yes and no
I'm trying to get people to sign the MoveOn petition to save NPR. I'm trying to point out that it is a great source of news. It is the best mainstream source of news out there. Air America, Raw STory, Buzzflash, Bradblog, DU, and free press aren't mainstream news sources. The DU is probably the best place to get news stories from all over the place. So I'm not serious in that I think there are better sources out there than NPR.
But there is no better mainstream American source than NPR.

16. mainstream or not, NPR is not a good source of news
when they glance over the most important stories of our time, or ignore them completely, the cease to be a "good" source of news by any measurement.

9. I'm a magazine junkie
I have subscriptions to The Nation, The Progressive, The Economist, Mother Jones and Utne Reader

I'm going to have to drop The Economist at the end of the year though...it's too darn expensive.
