White House Leaks: A serious security matter

SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER EDITORIAL BOARD

July 12, 2005

President Bush has plenty of evidence to begin acting on Karl Rove's involvement in the disclosure of a secret agent's name to exact political vengeance. The president's choice will say a lot about whether he intends to control abuses of power within what some see as one of the most power-hungry administrations the United States has ever experienced.

The president ought to be outraged that, so far, one reporter has gone to jail for acting honestly while some in his administration continue to be free of consequences for revealing Valerie Plame's identity as a CIA operative. The leak of her name and role to Bush-friendly columnist Robert Novak in 2003 was a violation of federal law, if done deliberately.

<clip>

The president would bring credit to himself and his administration by firing Rove immediately. Whether or not Rove violated the law, his actions on behalf of the administration broke trust with the American people and with the president's own stated view of the matter. Minimally, enough is known that the president must suspend Rove and cease all contacts with Rove until the investigation is complete. Rove, it appears, cannot be trusted with the United States' secrets.

Bush should also ask the prosecutor to seek the release of Miller from prison while the president urgently and personally renews his call for White House officials to help get to the bottom of the affair. Rove and others apparently didn't get the message nearly two years go when the president said, "I'd like to know who leaked, and if anybody has got any information inside our government ... you ought to take it to the Justice Department." Rather than letting an innocent journalist be imprisoned to clear up a matter of White House misconduct, Bush should be cleaning out his administration.

I like the 'frame' of this editorial because it places the responsiblity firmly where it has always belonged - On Bu$h.

I doubt that Mr Fitzgerald has Ms Miller in jail because she is innocent.

And, I think as each moment passes, Bu$h's ineffective management of the situation makes it ever more likely that Rove is hardly the only White House occupant who participated in the vile act of outing Ms Plame and the numerous vile consequences of that action.

Peace.

www.missionnotaccomplished.us - How ever long it takes, the day must come when tens of millions of caring individuals peacefully but persistently defy the dictator, deny the corporatists their cash flow, and halt the evil being done in Iraq and in all the other places the Bu$h neoconster regime is destroying civilization and the environment in the name of "America."

5. It will be a damn shame
if Hearst and the Blethens wind up killing the P-I.

That paper's been a fine liberal voice for decades, but if that JOA gets broken, it's over for them.

6. Be sure to vote in the poll at the bottom of the page - 86.6%
voted "Fire Rove". :D

It's a lovely editorial -- I can dig their "let's pretend Bush actually gives a shit" angle. Hope it's effective.

8. USA Today: Dems call for action against Rove after leak report
Dems call for action against Rove after leak report

By Mark Memmott

Updated at 2018 EDT

WASHINGTON — The White House came under pressure Monday to explain what role, if any, top aide Karl Rove played in leaking the name of a covert CIA officer to a Time magazine reporter.

<clip>

Among Monday's calls for action against Rove:

• Rep. Louise Slaughter, D-N.Y., said Rove "should be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted."

• Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., said the president should suspend Rove's security clearances.

• Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., urged that Rove be called to a congressional hearing and put under oath.

• The liberal group MoveOn PAC said Rove should resign or be fired.

Be unrelenting in supporting those in Congress who clearly are defending our Constitution and the truth. Be unrelenting in bringing Bu$h, Rove and all the neoconsters to an accounting for their actions.

Peace.

12. Congresswoman Slaughter: Tell Bush to Fire Karl Rove!
ACTION ALERT: Tell Bush to Fire Karl Rove!

by Rep Louise Slaughter

Mon Jul 11th, 2005 at 20:36:36 PDT

I hope you'll endulge me by recommending this diary. I know I've posted earlier in the day about the same topic but I wanted to let you know I've bought over 40 blog ads (including DailyKos) on the issue and posted the following on my official blog at:

http://www.VoteLouise.com/blog

Let's see if we can get 100,000 people to join our call by week's end.

I'm sure you've heard the news.

President Bush's most trusted advisor, Karl Rove, has been named as the mysterious leak within the White House that identified former Ambassador Joe Wilson's wife, Valerie Plame, as an undercover agent in the CIA.

The news has sent shockwaves throughout Washington and America... and with good reason.

<clip>

Karl Rove should be fired and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. There can be no gray area here. Regardless of how he phrased it, regardless of how much detail he provided; he revealed the identity of an undercover CIA agent in a cold, calculated attempt to silence Ambassador Wilson from speaking out against the war in Iraq.

Please use the link below to join me in calling on the President to keep his word. What Rove did is reprehensible. Putting the life of an undercover CIA agent in jeopardy cannot be tolerated. He clearly deserves his pink slip.

10. Good article!
This is really starting to explode.

The house of cards is beginning to fall, and I think it's going to fall real fast from here.

I'm still wondering why Rove gave Cooper the green light to talk, and why wasnt the same call made to Miller?

My money is on Cheney, the puppet master himself.

What was that they were saying about a mandate, and political capital?

This Presidency is over.

Spokesman Holds Tongue During Intense Grilling

By Dana Milbank

Tuesday, July 12, 2005; Page A04

On the north lawn of the White House yesterday afternoon, gardeners were taking a chain saw and wood chipper to some tree branches. Inside the briefing room, reporters were taking press secretary Scott McClellan to the woodshed.

It was journalists' first chance to grill McClellan on camera since coming to the conclusion that he had misled them 18 months ago when he said President Bush's top political aide, Karl Rove, had nothing to do with the unmasking of a CIA operative. The recipients of McClellan's bum steer were furious -- hectoring him more than questioning him.

"This is ridiculous!"

"You're in a bad spot here, Scott."

"Have you consulted a personal attorney?"

<clip>

McClellan is indeed well liked by the press corps. But that counts for little now, when recent events have shown that he either misled reporters deliberately or was duped by his White House colleagues. Ken Herman, the voluble Cox News White House reporter, even invoked Watergate days, asking if McClellan's previous statements are "all inoperative."

Bush Aide Deflects Questions On Rove
Democrats Seek Firing in Leak Case

By Mike Allen and Dan Balz

Washington Post Staff Writers
Tuesday, July 12, 2005; Page A01

President Bush's aides threw up a wall yesterday when questioned about revelations that White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove had discussed the role of CIA official Valerie Plame with a reporter despite past White House assertions that he was not involved in her unmasking.

Engulfed by questions at two combative briefings, White House press secretary Scott McClellan cited the continuing criminal investigation to say that he would not discuss conversations Rove had with a reporter about Plame before her name was published, or say whether Bush's pledge to fire anyone involved in leaking classified information still stands.

"No one wants to get to the bottom of it more than the president of the United States," McClellan said, echoing his two-year-old position on the case. "And I think the way to be most helpful is to not get into commenting on it while it is an ongoing investigation."

Democrats, emboldened by having the White House on the defensive, began a campaign to pressure Rove to give up his security clearances, answer questions before Congress and even resign.

As you read these two articles, you will hardly need a bullshit detector; the spin, by both media types and Rovian associates is so pathetically obvious as to be insulting - not for what they state but for being so pathetically obvious.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- With a criminal probe heating up into who exposed an undercover CIA agent, the White House spokesman is fending off sharp questions about what role U.S. President George W. Bush's top political adviser may have played in the case.
