How Baton Rouge got AAR and How you can get it in your town too!

From hbyronk on DailyKos:

UPDATE: Air America in Bush Country - How it was done
by hbyronk
Tue Jul 12th, 2005 at 14:15:15 PDT
In an earlier post, I explained that a group of interested citizens, led by a Baton Rouge woman named Vicki Lancaster, had convinced Clear Channel to put Air America Radio on one of its broadcast properties in Louisiana's capitol city.

Ms. Lancaster responded by leaving a comment on my blog, where the story was cross-posted. She explained how she and her associates went about it.

This could serve as a template for Progressives around the country in convincing radio broadcasters to make Air America available on their airwaves.

Diaries :: hbyronk's diary :: ::
Ms. Lancaster writes:

e had a lot of good advice with regard to our efforts to bring progressive talk to BR. We first found all the commercial radio stations in BR and got their Arbitron ratings. We found a Clear Channel station that was floundering and changing formats with no success. So we went to the regional VP of Clear Channel armed with marketing info about Air America and articles on the success of progressive talk radio and we asked CC what would it take for them to switch one of their stations to progressive talk. We were told - get 1000 names and contact info - we did it and put the info in an Excel data base - and CC kept their word. Don't ever let anyone tell you a few committed individuals cannot make a difference. We are now working on getting Democracy Now (independent news) aired in BR.
Don't ever let anyone tell you a few committed individuals cannot make a difference.

And, by "a few committed individuals," Ms. Lancaster means, literally, a few. Six people circulated the petition, gathering 1,500 signatures, to convince Clear Channel to place Air America on its low-rated AM country station in Baton Rouge. They understood that, no matter the political leanings of its top management, Clear Channel is business to make money. If they believe that there is an audience for Progressive talk, they will take a chance on it. They would rather do this than continue to lose money running country music on an AM station that nobody is listening to. It is just common sense.

I cannot emphasize strongly enough the potential this has to serve as a model for similar actions in radio markets across this country. Not only can it work, the Baton Rouge 6 have demonstrated that it WILL work.

I know it's kind of tacky, but I am asking for "Recommends" for this post so that more people will have a chance to read Ms. Lancaster's comments and understand that we have the ability, through purely constructive means, to crack the stronghold that conservatives have had on talk radio for the past 20 years. Think about how important talk radio has been to the GOP message machine. Then, think about what we can accomplish when our superior ideas get the same kind of exposure.

UncommonSense

edit to add (thanks to JacksonBlogs) - You can find the Arbitron ratings among all listeners aged 12 and up for each radio market, along with a history going back a couple of ratings periods, at the Radio and Records site here http://www.radioandrecords.com/RRRatings/

1. That's really a great story. Amazing what you can do if you just try.
What's the worst they could have done? Said NO?

3. I love that they did it with six people. Since Clear Channel has
channels everywhere, I wonder if they would do this all over the country in the same way?

4. recommended... I understand there are some barren spots
out Kansas way. This is a good time for this push, since AAR switched from one satellite to another.

11. I started a thread in the Missouri forum about getting AAR for KC
after I saw a short blurb on the Baton Rouge station over the weekend.

Scratchtasia responded that some people were working on it and she included a link to the Greater Kansas City Area DFA Progressive Media Task Force http://dfakc.org/?q=taxonomy/term/14.

6. I have been interested in working on this in Bloomington
Indiana for a while. Do you know how we can find out what stations in Indiana are Clear Channel stations and how do we get Arbitron ratings? We could get 1,500 signatures pretty quickly down here.

16. WOW - Thank you!
I don't think we get WNDE here in Bton. I can tune in only 1 or 2 Indy stations. Bton is in a 'bowl' and the local NPR station has such a strong signal that it knocks out reception of distant stations. (I know that sounds weird, but whenever the NPR stations goes off air for a few hours or days - I can tune in all kinds of stations I can't normally get).

I will bookmark this page and visit again to see what I can find out about stations that I can tune in here.

17. Here is some more advice from kineticdissent in the DailyKos thread:
"I commend the efforts in Baton Rouge, and I agree with the way that group achieved it.

And now, I'm gonna (hopefully) give you guys more pointers on how to do it over and over again.

First of all, it would cost virtually NOTHING to flip a low-performing AM station to AAR. Why's that? If the station isn't billing, it's just not billing, and there's nothing you can do about it. Stations that should be targeted are music stations on the AM band. Chances are, low-billing stations are already running mostly satellite/syndicated programming, so the infrastructure is already in place. It's essentially flipping a switch. Actually, it's changing codes on a satellite transponder, but you get the idea.

Second, AAR is already cost-effective...Unfortunately I don't have the exact numbers available to me, but I'm willing to bet that AAR charges nothing or close to nothing to run their programming. Satellite/syndicated radio is paid for by the advertisements run during that show. Local stations make money by selling local available time. Your run-of-the-mill AM talk/news clock goes something like this, for every hour of programming..

00:00-00:06 - network news
00:06-00:07 - local available
00:07-00:15 - program content
00:15-00:18 - network spots (national ads)
00:18-00:20 - local available
00:20-00:35 - program content
00:35-00:38 - network spots
00:38-00:40 - local available
00:40-00:58:50 - program content
00:58:50-00:59:50 - local available
00:59:50-00:00 - top of the hour legal ID

That's it. The actual times may vary, and there might be more network/local spots but the basics are right there. Chances are, if you're hearing all these national ads, and then a bunch of PSAs (the Ad Council, etc.) that station is NOT billing well at all. Generally, the night daypart (7p-midnight) and the overnight (Midnight-6am) are the worst billing dayparts, and if you hear a lot of PSAs during that time, don't be surprised.

In talk radio, if you hear a lot of PSAs from 6am-6p, that station is in trouble with a capital T.

Listen for low-performing stations with the guidelines I gave you, and you'll find prime targets for a format flip.

I've been meaning to make a longish radio-intensive diary, I just haven't had the time. oh, my credentials? 10+ years in radio, from local music FM to NPR affiliates to mostly syndicated AM talk radio. I've done them all, and my current position is traffic director, meaning I handle and schedule all the commercials played on my stations (I have 3). I also deal with syndicated programming, and know for a fact that very, very few syndicated programs charge a fee for use. Other than the big ones (Rush, Imus, Stern, morning shows like Bob & Tom, etc.) they are ALL run on barter...meaning the station has to run the spots that are included during the program. Every now and then (Alan Kabel for example, who does a national Hot AC show at nights, or Danny Wright, a national country overnight host) you'll find shows that make you run a minute or two worth of commercials during the day, but the vast majority is all barter, thus no cost to the station's owner.

Hope this helps.

turned my AM station on here and Al Franken came out of it (his voice, not him):-). I got kind of confused for a moment. So, I shook my head and took a better listen and sure enuff.....AL!!

I live in WV which has turned so red we glow at night. But this station has been brave, they started with Hartmann and Schultz. They got great feedback, so they tell me. So they signed up Franken, RR, and Sam and Jeannine I think. HOWEVER, complaints are pouring in even from Liberals re: language. People here don't care for potty mouths (their term not mine). Apparently Al said "go screw yourself" to someone and it didn't go over big here. I hope we overcome this and move on!!!!
