Why Cindy Sheehan Matters

Cindy Sheehan is just one of countless mothers who have lost their children to war. Why is she attracting so much attention? It is because she is the only mother who has had the guts to ask the Commander-in-Chief to look her in the eye and tell her why he wasted her son in an unnecessary and badly executed war of choice. Although the number of supporters standing with her grows every day, this gutsy lady started this by herself. The contrast of this woman with the miserable coward hiding out up the road could not be more dramatic.

Cindy Sheehan is doing something noble and courageous. The man she is confronting does not have an act of courage or nobility anywhere in his résumé . His life has been a series of escapes from any threat to his comfort or well being. Cindy Sheehan is willing to wait him out in the miserable Texas summer while he sets knew records for taxpayer funded vacation days. All the carefully scripted press events that he has staged around the country are so much more laughable in light of his refusal to even acknowledge the uninvited guest at his doorstep.

Anyone who tells Cindy Sheehan that she is dishonoring her son’s memory or failing to support his comrades in arms just doesn’t get it. She is causing all of to question the sanity of the idea that you honor the fallen by sending more to die in their place. A government has a right to ask for sacrifice in a just cause but this war is so tainted by lies and deception that calling for more Casey Sheehans to die is obscene. The Bush administration has hidden the coffins of the fallen from the public view but Cindy Sheehan is forcing the country to take a hard look at the reality of all those flag-draped caskets streaming home.
