19. I think there might be an error at the end?
It says that Maryland commissioned a study of the voting machines by Johns Hopkins University. Didn't the commission the study from SAIC? I think the Johns Hopkins study was earlier and was an independent review of some of the Diebold code from an anonymous Web site.

Pretty sure Maryland actually commissioned SAIC for the study.

7. You are all patriots
Bev, Dave, Al, and the too many to count DU activists who worked so tirelessly on this issue to get it this far. I wish Bev & Dave all the success on the book as well. They've put their lives on hold for close to a year getting this out. They deserve a huge DU party down the road.

I even heard someone try to give me info on www.blackboxvoting.com tonight at an Al Franken book signing. The word is getting out, and Al Franken does know about the issue too, but didn't get to mention it. Can anyone confirm if Michael Moore discussed on last weekends Bill Maher's HBO show? That would be huge for the cause.

A while back I wrote a couple of County Council members about BBV stuff. One of them, who in his reply pointed me at a later Seattle Times article (getting the questions out, sort of, including some fictions, unfortunately), also forwarded my letter to "Dean Logan. director-designee. King County Records, Elections & Licensing Services." Logan. in his reply as forwarded to me, also mentioned that another Council member (not the second one I wrote to) had raised similar concerns. Logan was non-committal (surprise?), but the issue is being examined.

Putting the book online will give me a very convenient encyclopedia to cite in future correspondence. By putting it in HTML, as well as PDF format, I can point these short-attention-spanners at precisely relevant pages instead of asking the to read some book or even a chapter. Good important work, David. And Bev and Demactivist and gristy and dusty64 and redeagle and sagle and jim march and Pobeka and David Dill and Kim Alexander and Rebecca Mercuri and Stanford and Johns Hopkins ... and ... and .... (Not in any particua;r order.)

As new facts emerge they need to be incorporated in the relevant sections. And as I and others read the online texts there will be discussions about how to make changes to make the text even more clear and accurate. Some of these will identify changes worth making to the printed book and online text. This "open source" model for publishing has lots of advantages.

23. I really like the idea...
... and I doubt the open publishing will harm sales of the book to any meaningful degree. And, the way this story has unfolded, there are going to be continuing episodes, I'm sure. There's so much still out there (such as the new name popping up in odd places, further explorations of other manufacturers), and there's much left to know about the old standbys such as RDL.

Cheers.

Actually, what I think we have here is a completely new animal:

Open Source Investigative Journalism

As new leads and facts are developed, ideas and conclusions can be debated and vetted. I think something very interesing has been born here in the last six months.

Once the Black Box Yakuza is lying in ruin, I would like to turn my attention to this idea. <s>

to get the print version as precise as possible, through "open source" proofing. But we can't wait long to get the trade paperback version out, since it has a 3-week print cycle time.

Okay, so I haven't had a chance to publicly say this about David Allen, of Plan Nine Publishing:

I had three publishers throwing book contracts at me. One, a political one from Berkeley. One, a major publishing house. And David. I have literally had people tell me "you made a mistake, you made a mistake."

Everyone knew this book was major. But they didn't all know what I knew. I handled literary marketing for investigative reporter Jack Anderson, and I watched major publishers kill one of his books because they decided it was too controversial. When you are with the big boys, if they want the work squashed, that's exactly what they do. They kill it and pay you your fee and you're book is gone.

The political publisher would have been very good. He is very experienced, mid-sized, very smart. But something about David just said it all -- he had tech knowledge and was able to make a complex subject somewhat entertaining and most of all, he has GUTS.

This weekend, I learned something very important about him. I've had a very difficult time lately, and frankly, this is lonely and scary and I lost much of my support network. I've been thinking, "what am I doing this for?" I won't go into it; I was affluent, now I'm broke, the business had to shut down, some of my clients are pissed, and they have a right to be. Of course, I get threat email and nastygrams and then I read in the paper that Diebold's official position is that I'm a thief.

All I really wanted to do was get the information out, because I know my investigative work is outstanding -- how could it not be? I had the help of hundreds of brilliant DUers and some of the most amazing minds (DemActivist, Eloriel) you can imagine!

Okay, I was crying. It was Saturday night. David was on the phone offering the support to keep cranking this stuff out, and he says exactly what was on my mind: Let's just give the book away. Make sure everyone has it.

Because the truth is, neither of us did this for money, fame, or anything else. I've been trying to pass the torch since two weeks after I found this story, trying to hand documents to lawyers, journalists, law enforcement, anyone who would listen. They did not do their job (except for Alastair Thompson, of Scoop Media).

Can you even imagine a publisher who says, "okay, we'll provide the book for free." -- ??? Can you? Can you imagine a publisher who says "if they want to gag me, they'll have to use the bandanna method, because a piece of paper won't do it." A publisher who lines up printing and publishing in foreign countries to make sure this information gets out?

This is David Allen. Oh, and while running around trying to get the first two chapters on the web, he sees a dog get hit by a car, stops, helps the dog, comforts it until it dies. And then jumps back into gear and puts the chapters on the web ahead of schedule.

Everyone always does this "Bev Bev" thing.

Take a very careful look at David Allen. I'm getting so I enjoy that question, "So why did you choose Plan Nine Publishing?"

Yeah, TinfoilHat, I'll go with a comic book publisher every time, if it's this one.

Bev, you could have found tons of people with good packaging. What you found was a good product- David.

Yes, thanks to all who contributed so much. When journalism fails its duty, guess who stepped up to the plate? Did you all know you were investigative journalists?

See, the people CAN pull together for the cause. Congress, are you listening?

It's on the line now. How you decide to handle this will be very telling. Every career politician better know that to not act on this information is to act against democracy.

Time for some accountability- from machines and representatives.

34. Punpirate, you beat me to it=-blanket Congress with the book
OK, let's do this!

Since we can all get the book on line and since I suspect many congressional types won't spend the time at the computer to read the book there....

I'm going to buy and send two copies of the book, one to Patty Murray, my senator, and one to Fritz Hollings, because he might be inclined to do something about this.

Folks, we can just about insure that every member of congress gets a copy of this book.

Make sure to cover the most likely to actually DO something first, then everyone else.

One sticky point, and I emailed David about this but I know he's up to his eyeballs in stuff to do-

We need a way to not DUPLICATE our efforts. Multiple copies of books going to one person isn't going to get the job done.

So, we need a way to keep track of this and people can sign on (pledge) to buy a book and have it shipped to a specific congress person.

I've got Murray and Hollings, how about anyone else?

(And ideas how to keep a list and keep track of who's been covered in Congress by a pledge to buy and have a book shipped to them)

And I'll admit for a while I was uncomfortable with the idea -- not quite sure why. But in all probability, it may be the ONLY way to go. One thing for sure, a helluva lotta more people will read it, and that IS the most important thing.

Frankly, I'd have loved to have seen Bev and David get fabulously wealthy from this. Lord knows I have some sense of the hours and hours of work, toil and trouble, the heartache, the confusion and at times desperation that went into all this. But there's no amount of money that can buy democracy itself -- or should I say "ransom" democracy itself. So in the final analysis, yeah, it probably had to be done this way.

We haven't won yet, that's for sure, but let's toast to Great Beginnings. Let's toast to the power of average citizens, working together, to make a difference.

I'll be giving a very small talk on the Voting Machines Issue at a Dean MeetUp tonight in Atlanta. It'll be WONDERFUL to tell them they can start reading the book.

In Georgia, we also need to start educating our STATE legislators.

And don't forget, everyone, please start making calls to get more sponsors (ESP. Republicans) to sign on to Rush Holt's H.R. 2239.

AND, don't forget to signe up for Election Reform MeetUps -- http:/www.electionreform.meetup.com which are scheduled for Oct. 8 (next Wednesday). And oh yeah -- get thee to MoveOn to vote for the issue:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=446536

Well done, Bev and David. And thank you. I'll be ordering several books myself in the next several days.

Subject: The Black Box Voting revolution is still rolling on... Read The Book Online....

Date sent: Wed, 1 Oct 2003 18:41:15 +1200

Dear All,

The Black Box Voting revolution is still rolling on... and here is the
latest development. A book that has been eagerly awaited all over
the US and around the world is out.. and while you ought to buy it
and send it to your representatives, you can read it online now. The
book has been open sourced. Chapters 1&2 are online now and
more will follow tomorrow...

Your mission, if you are willing to accept it, is to blog it, post it,
knock on the editors door and insist that he assign a reporter to it.
For all you need to know read on for Bev's announcement....

Yours sincerely Alastair Thompson
Scoop Editor
New Zealand

An open letter from Bev Harris – blackboxvoting.com

http://www.blackboxvoting.com

Dear Everyody,

Black Box Voting – The book is out of the gate. Go here for FREE
electronic chapters 1-2. New uploads are scheduled every two
days. (They may come sooner.)

http://www.blackboxvoting.com

The book is also mirrored in PDF format on Scoop's "A Very
American Coup Page"

http://www.scoop.co.nz/mason/features/?s=usacoup

I would very much appreciate it if you post every chapter you get at
your web site, distribute them to public officials, call reporters
about them, e-mail this message to your contact lists. If you are a
journalist, review the information. If the site goes down, due to
hacking or legal retaliation by voting machine vendors, write about
it.

If you are a citizen who is skilled with flash media or shockwave,
we encourage you to create presentations; you will find it easy to
script them when you read these chapters. Whether your work
takes a serious or humorous tone, you'll have plenty of fodder to
work with. Write songs, perform poetry, make documentaries.
Don't wait. We can solve this thing, and we can do so quickly, but
you must get involved.

(TIP: Watch for 'real time' voting forum to go live with citizen voting
reports, on Monday, just in time for the California recall).

The Black Box Voting project has been 'open sourced' from the get-
go. It was an 'open source' investigation, with citizens joining in all
over the world to contribute expertise and research. We 'open
sourced' the book, making electronic versions free of charge. A
trade paperback version will also be available so you can distribute
attractive and compact versions to everyone who needs them.
Select whichever information format meets your needs.

WHAT IS IN THE BLACK BOX VOTING CHAPTERS?

They are posted chapter by chapter, in both PDF and PNG
formats. The open source license is quite generous, but of course
we ask that you adhere to it. (It contains provisions like: you
cannot sell the book for money; you cannot change the
book…quite simple, really).

Chapter 1 (which also includes introductory material) explains
what the founding fathers had in mind when they chose to control
the governance of a country through voting. Chapter 1 contains a
call to engage.

Chapter 2 is what we call the 'I don't believe there is a problem'
chapter. It contains a dizzying assortment of real voting machine
miscounts in real elections, all documented to help you do
additional research if you like.

Next: Chapt. 3 – Solutions; Chapt. 4: Can the machines be rigged?

Watch for new uploads – they may appear early. Post them as
many places as you can; you should know that there are
continuing efforts to block publication of information about how our
votes are counted, though doing so has no legal merit and thwarts
the First Amendment.

Diebold Election Systems issued a DMCA pull-down demand and
successfully shut down BlackBoxVoting.org, the sister site of
BlackBoxVoting.com, simply for putting a link to an unrelated page
containing a link to damaging internal memos. They asserted
copyright privileges (confirming the memos' authenticity). The
memos are still available on the web, but Diebold's action shut
down our popular discussion and planning forum. We may move
our discussion forums to New Zealand, where there is more
support for free speech. ES&S sent a threat letter simply because
they said the information made them look bad.

Diffusion will help, and we ask you to assist us with this. There is
perhaps nothing simpler, or more important, that you can do. Read
the chapters and see: There is nothing illegal about them, and
citizens throughout the world have an absolute right to the
information. If you are a reporter, read the chapters, verify the
information for yourself, and then watch: If there is any corporate
retaliation, please write about it.

Thanks to all of you who have contributed to bringing these issues
into public awareness.

- Bev Harris

You're Alastair Thompson?

The guy who graciously (and unnecessarily) thanked me for the simple act of mirroring Jim March's Diebold files (for a day, grrr, Diebold sucks) - I had no idea you were even on DU! Small world!

You rock, man. Glad to finally make the connection between there and here. :)

Very crisp accent too, quite fun to talk to.

As we're figuring out here in the US of A, New Zealand rocks (currently, New Zealand also seems a little more sensible than our country, at least if we have to judge our country by its leaders)

44. Re: Montgomery County Maryland's perfect election...
Edited on Wed Oct-01-03 06:19 AM by althecat
This post relates to..

http://www.blackboxvoting.com/bbv/bbv_chapter-2_18.html

The top of this page quotes Bob Urosevich on the 2002 Montgomery County election trial boasting that "every single vote was accurately counted".

Aha thought I. I have just read something about that perfect election...

In one of the memos.. Sue Page, Maryland Project Manager, Diebold Election Systems, reported, "Montgomery County resolved all of their process issues that caused delayed openings and closings in the Primary. They were 90% reporting by 10:00, and completed the election at 11:40 (missing only 4 PC Cards)."

Excellent indeed.. only four cards were missing...that's a bit like only missing four ballot boxes. She goes on to make a few more observations in her memo on Bob's "perfect" Montgomery Maryland election..

"One small issue kept the election from being "perfect" in Maryland. There was one legislative district that retained the party designation from the Primary, rather than being changed to Non Partisan."

"Montgomery County's attorney insisted on capturing the write-in votes for the registered candidates - - by precinct.... this
involved 4000 data entry edits....Is there a better way?"

"Montgomery County had to initiate the printing of the Election
Summary Report 227 times, each time selecting a different precinct. They printed these reports <3 times> - altogether initiating 681 separate reports. Perhaps this has already been improved in something beyond GEMS 1.17.17 - but if not . . ."

Wonderfully constructive critcisms I thought....

45. Chapter 2 seems to explain why Diebold bought GES and not ES&S
ES&S's software is even worse! And their management seems to be equally daft...

http://www.blackboxvoting.com/bbv/bbv_chapter-2_25.html

"ES&S assured voters that votes were never lost, just uncounted."

Incendiary it is indeed...

72. Thanks Bev! Wonderful thing you and David are doing here!
Consumer supported, 'Buy if you like it', open source investigative journalism! What a concept. :)

It would appear the people have evolved beyond the outdated concept of total reliance on an increasingly corporate controlled media for their information. (And just in time too!)
To the media I say, "Behold the power of 'Massive Parallel Browsing'"!

Loved hearing you on the Malloy show. That was one of the shortest hours of radio I can remember. For all who missed it, here's a link from the White Rose Society.org web site to the Mike Malloy broadcast from Friday, September 26th, 2003. Bev's segment is the second hour of the program and DU's own Symbolman does the News sponsored by Take Back the Media.com!

Any idea on when we'll get our forum back?
Still working on a couple of surprises here to help kick this into high gear. I'll contact you later to bring you up to date.

63. Keeping Track of Books to Congress
Edited on Wed Oct-01-03 12:56 PM by RedEagle
OK, David and I have been kind of working on this. Punpirate and I had the idea, I don't have the skills to carry it off on a web page.

David, amoung many other simulataneous juggling acts, may have a solution for keeping track of books ordered for congress in the works.

Meanwhile, I've got lists of congress people and I would be willing to keep track, as best I can, of which congress people are covered and by who.

So, until something better comes along, if you want to participate in this, you can email me via PM, and I'll just keep my lists handy by the computer and hopefully, create lists of reps and senators who still need the books.

What I need are the names of the states and full names of the senators and reps. Last names only won't do as there are people with the same name. I can guess by nostamj's post that it's New York and Hillary (Clinton) and Chuck (Schumer) are covered. I've got Washington, Patty Murray; and South Carolina, Fritz Hollings.

Please also ID yourself by your DU name.

I can email back and let you know if your selection is already covered. It matters not if your state is already done. We need to blanket congress- so we can hold them all accountable!

Let's keep this kicked or transferred to similar threads.

Please DO include your rep or senators address information when you place your order for the book. You should be able to get that from the site listed below. I just called Murray's office and they told me to get literature read it would be best to send it to the D.C. offices. That may vary by person, but that's what I'll use as a guideline for now.

If you don't know your senators or reps, visit:

http://thomas.loc.gov/home/faqlist.html
Click on #7
Got to #7 select senate or house to click on
At the senate page, on the right hand side, you can click on a
PDF, or just scroll down the page.

Bev, Demactivist, Eloriel, David, Alastair, dmr, and others I don't mean to exclude, have done the heavy lifting on this. Time for us to take care of the distribution.

Let's roll!

I'm trying not to hijack the thread with this or have it get too long.

Please PM me. I will just cross these off on a first come basis.

I usually check in on DU at least twice a day, so if you want to use the PM function for a short time only, I should be able to confirm it pretty quickly.

Please, keep giving me the congress people's full names and state.

Punpirate, what are the names of the reps you are sending a book to?

Edited on Wed Oct-01-03 11:08 PM by punpirate
... that all Congress people have staffers, so if there are duplications, it's not a disaster. Besides, it would be sort of fun to see that people are expressing their opinion with a book (imagining mailbags of these books coming in to each office...).

Wouldn't hurt sales, either. *smile*

For DUers who can't afford the book, or can only afford one copy, they can always print it out and mail their Congress critter a copy.

Cheers.

71. We need a cover letter to send with the book- Gordon? Eloriel?
So that these Senators and Representatives KNOW why they are receiving the Black Box Voting box, and what we expect of them, we need a letter that David can ship along with the book.

Gordon, Eloriel, whoever, If you're not too busy (umph) with the Arizona uprisizing, or the Georgia locked document box, or anyone doing activism in general, could you come up with a letter, one page preferred, that lays it out for our "elected" representatives?

I know we've got some talented people here who are much better at laying it on the line, in fewer words, without burying it in detail some people don't yet understand. (Like I do)
