Dean Seems To Have Narrowly Missed His Goal :-(
of 15 Million.

The total shown on Dean's bat, labled as of Tuesday, 12:00, is $14,786,510.00

Are there funds being counted that have not yet been added? Does anyone know if this is a final number?

Still, 14 million...whew! :-)

3. it's usually a tactical mistake...
...to set a goal that's very difficult to achieve in a highly visible and publicized matter. Failing to reach that goal could turn loose the hounds who would love to say he's lost momentum.

I hope his strategists keep this in mind. A master entertainment mogul once told me to never oversell.

25. I say aim high
and besides they are still counting checks that have come in thru the mail, he might yet get $15 million or exceed it, and even if he doesn't 14.8 million raised and $5.1 million in just the last ten days is incredible grass roots showing.

4. ok...why not?
the donation total reads "as of Tuesday, 12:00" which is the deadline...

What am I missing? Can you elaborate?

6. Let me rephrase:
This is the hard and fast FCC deadline for the quarter, not some internal Dean deadline that can be fudged...

Again, how could there be more to report if the FCC deadline has passed?

here's some info regarding the goal(s)
Our original goal for this quarter was $7.6 million -- to match what you accomplished last quarter. When we saw that we would surpass that goal we raised the bar to matching the record set by President Clinton. 10 days ago we had raised $9.7 million and we set the goal of raising $5 million dollars in just 10 days. You did that. Tonight we sit at $14.8 million -- $5.1 million over 10 days.

Frankly so many people gave in so many ways, and there is some mail that still needs to be opened that we may very well reach our publicly set goal of $15 million.

24. I don't know whether it is final or not., but...
If they received a donation (say, a check in the mail) by yesterday at midnight, it would count toward the quarter, whether they opened the envelop or not.

Or, if checks were given yesterday to a campaign employee in, say, Iowa, but haven't been overnighted to Vermont yet, they would count toward the quarter.

Since they had this goal, there probably aren't many uncounted donations yet, but it is possible.

8. AFAIK, cheques that are already in the mail can be counted for the 3rd Q
tally (correct me if I'm wrong on this) and I'd bet that'll be enough to push it over the top.

16. because the 12:00 is eastern time
The far flung contributions are still in the nether world of being delivered.

But still, we eclipsed Clinton's previous record of 10.4 million by quite a sum.

And we did it in 20 and 45 buck whacks.

Our goal is to get a million people to each give 50 bucks next quarter. Well, that's what I'm pushing for.....

2. I don't think that it is the final number...
...they are just playing with people, trying to get them to stay up until they update it, usually around 5am. Maybe not, but I suspect it's not all been counted, although I don't know how exactly that works. I do know that I kicked the bat around three or four hours ago, and the transaction is still 'open', so who knows, eh?

When they first put the 5 million up.

Color me impressed it was the new quarterly
Democratic fundraising record.

Go Dean Team!!!

21. Well, we did...
...5 million in 10 days, as per the original goal. Rather than playing the game of "low expectations", which GWB handles so well, we are setting expectations high, and exceeding them at every opportunity. Even if 15 mil isn't officially broken, the 5 bats in 10 days was accomplished; the breaking of Clintons record, in small donations, was accomplished. It's going to be hard for the press to say "Dean is losing steam" with 5.1 million in 10 days, even with new dynamics in the race.

7. It's not the final number because.....
Edited on Wed Oct-01-03 02:29 AM by MercutioATC
Any contribution postmarked on or before Sep. 30th is a Q3 contribution. If I mailed a contribution yesterday, it won't get there until tomorrow, but it's still, by law, a Q3 contribution.

Granted, that's no guarantee, but there IS money that hasn't been counted yet.

9. Got it, thanks!
So, do you know by when the FCC paperwork must be filed? Do we have to wait a week before we know the totals?

ARRGGH! :-)

11. FEC Paperwork Must Be Filed by the 15th, IIRC
So it could be as long as a 15-day wait.

10. Actually, I Don't Think That's True
Credit card transactions are processed right away; mailed transactions must be actually RECEIVED by the deadline in order to count, IIRC.

It's quite possible that Dean still has unprocessed checks that he received today or earlier, however. That was the implication from some internal campaign reports I read yesterday.

12. you're wrong
as long as the envelopes are post-dated by 9/30 it counts towards Q3

15. Pruner is right. Like your 1040, it's the postmark that counts...
not the date on which it's received.

13. OK, then, let's assume Dean hit the goal...
What does that imply?

I mean, other than a 3Q record, what do you think this means to the Dean campaign?

A burst of energy to help stave off the Clark campaign?
Another claim to front runner status?
Proof of electability?

What does it mean?

17. A nice Q3 haul and bragging rights. It's a great acomplishment,
but it's not the whole campaign. I happen to believe that Dean's the right person for the job and that enough people will feel the same by election time to make him President, but that's down the road a bit.

Basically, I think it gives us a really nice base to REALLY get the message out in Q4.

18. It means we clearly have a superior fund raising model and campaign
I don't think we need to concerna ourselves with doing and being anything other than what we are , supporting the eventual democratic nominee through energizing the non traditional electorate.

Take a lesson oter campaigns: this is how it's done.

I started a thread yesterday asking the same question in a different way. It was simply titled 'Howard Dean.' Perhaps the answer is in that thread -- a few Dean people thought so, anyway.

23. Snail mail checks postmarked with Sep 30 have not been counted
yet and will be added to the 3rd QTR total. All checks must be counted by Oct 15 FEC deadline.

Dean missed the $5 million online donation by a couple hundred thousand, but he succeeded in smashing Bill Clinton's single quarter fundraising record of $10.3 million. This is a huge achievement because Clinton set the record as a sitting President with money from large donors. Dean did it as an unemployed governor, in the worse quarter for fundraising, and with thousands of small donations.

Dean's campaign is people-powered.
