25. Heck, LA gets a tornado EVERY winter, usually off the coast of
Huntington Beach, or south of Long Beach. This past winter with all our huge storms and recordbreaking rainfall, we had SEVERAL tornados, including a couple up in VENTURA COUNTY.

The movie The Day After Tomorrow was not much of an exaggeration WRT the LA tornado scenes.

I said Fuck No we travel on dirt paths and at the end of the day I take out my knife and carve a piece of meat out of the deer I have hanging in a tree and eat supper.

I just happen to be lucky enough to live in one where they're considered normal.

I hope this is an F0 and it spins itself out fast.

38. Yes, they can get tornadoes and waterspouts.
Tornadoes can happen in any part of the world. There are some places where they are rare, but no part of the world is immune.

34. Average number of tornadoes in UK is 33
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/3059663.stm

UK, Holland top twister league

BBC Science

Britain has the highest frequency of tornadoes, or twisters, over its land surface of any country in Europe, a report confirms.

British tornadoes rarely cause much damage
The figures also show that the number of tornadoes in Europe each year could be around seven times greater than previously thought.

The UK experiences an estimated 50 tornadoes on land each year, putting it top of the European twister league. The Netherlands is in second place, with an estimated 35 twisters each year over its comparatively small land area.

Twisters are usually associated with the American Midwest, particularly the states of Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska - which comprise an area nicknamed "Tornado Alley".

An average 1,170 twisters are observed on land each year in the US. The most violent can cause widespread destruction to property and lead to many fatalities.

<snip>
The average number of tornadoes reported each year in the UK is actually 33. But the figure of 50 tornadoes per year takes into account under-reporting.

Have also seen several tornadoes in MN...not wholly unusual.

The facts:
http://climate.umn.edu/doc/historical/tornadic.htm

<snip>
In Minnesota, tornadoes have occurred in every month from March through November. The earliest verified tornado in Minnesota occurred on March 18, 1968, north of Truman, and the latest in any year on November 16, 1931, east of Maple Plain. Historically and statistically, June is the month of greatest frequency with July not far behind. May has the third greatest frequency, followed closely by August. Nearly 3/4 of all tornadoes in Minnesota have occurred during the three months of May (16%), June (33%), and July (27%).

The most probable danger period in Minnesota, therefore, is late spring and early summer, between 2PM and 9PM. However, tornadoes can and do occur at any time of the day or night.

And Boscobel in the late '80's IIRC, etc. Yeah. Wisconsin gets tornadoes. The only major natural disasters we get, except for forest fires and floods. No mudslides, earthquakes or hurricanes.

23. ...I don't think there was a touchdown or even a funnel cloud near
downtown. I'd've known about it too since I live ~5 miles from the city's center. They were WARNING about it, yes. The storm has been relitively tame (not even as bad as that afternoon one we got in mid June).

There's nothing on the Star Trib site, the sirens are off, and MPR is just wrapping up with "The World". You'd think they'd be screeching about it if there was an actual touchdown.

Although apparently there was a funnel cloud spotted 9mi northeast of St. Paul. No word on whether or not that came to anything.

32. Downtown's pretty uncommon...
...but not unheard of (I remember hearing about one hitting downtown Nashville a few years ago).

It is kinda late in the season, but it's been pretty warm in the midwest for the past couple days. Here in Ohio tornadoes are somewhat common, but they're usually pretty minor (Not like those big huge suckers you see barreling through fields in Oklahoma or Nebraska). Every once in a while, though, we'll get clobbered. A couple years back, there were a pair of tornadoes that ripped through Van Wert (about 45 minutes away from where I live) and killed about 5 people. And this was in November.
