Amazing NASA Satellite pictures of Hurricane Rita (MODIS)
These are considered "Medium Resolution" pictures, but compared to the average Weather satellite, these are very detailed.

Note: These links are to the MODIS Gallery, linking directly is prohibited because of size, these are the first two on the top row.

In the shot from today, you can see Houston on the Left side of the frame and can really see the size comparison. If you look into the "eye" I think that is even turbulent, white capped water, I believe Rita was still a Cat. 5 at this point.

This one is is from yesterday when Rita was still strengthening, I think it was a Cat 4 at this point.

1. I'd like to see comparable photos of Katrina, for comparison
I tried searching the archives but no can do.

I didn't bookmark any, either.

I'd like to see the same photo for Katrina when it was in approximately the same spot.

Anyone have that? It'd be cool.

2. Here's a gallery of photos taken by NOAA Hurricane Hunters
inside the "eye" of Katrina. VERY awesome.

5. Cool, The Weather Channel has a guy who flies with them...
I think his name is Wayne Madsen, and he was talking about "the stadium effect" today, which those pictures show.

7. It's hard to fathom that behind the serenity and beauty of those
clouds lies something so terrifying and destructive.

4. O.K., here you go.
It's actually very easy to find stuff if you know the date of a storm, all you do is scroll to the bottom of the Gallery page where you'll find what looks like small calenders. Just this once I'll include the links to Katrina, no charge. ;)

9. Cool, thanks, I owe you!
I was trying to find some, and just couldn't find comparable images -- same scale, taken in the same area of the gulf. I know they're out there, when I have time I'll track some more down, just to see.

I'm trying to see how this one looks compared to Katrina at various stages.

Thanks for the links.

8. The size of that thing makes one feel very small.
What games we play with our planet...but it is stronger.

12. Yes. It's about 550 miles from New Orleans to the Yucatan peninsula.
Note that the storm spans the entire Gulf.

11. I can see, her eye had claps and she is reforming her eye!
Edited on Thu Sep-22-05 07:38 PM by Rainscents
You cannot miss her eye being reforming, which mean, she can go to CAT5 just before landfall.
