GALLUP: Americans still think media too liberal...
GALLUP NEWS SERVICE

PRINCETON, NJ -- Forty-five percent of Americans believe the news media in this country are too liberal, while only 14% say the news media are too conservative. These perceptions of liberal inclination have not changed over the last three years. A majority of Americans who describe their political views as conservative perceive liberal leanings in the media, while only about a third of self-described liberals perceive conservative leanings.

per general discussion rule #3, i guess i have to say that i can't believe most liberals think the news media is just right. and where do they find people who call themselves liberals but yet think the media is too left wing?

1. Well, this needs a kick!
If only for the Circular Logic that seems to be at work here.

The Media keeps giving airtime to Wingers who whine about "liberal media."

Then The Media does a survey that shows a lot of Murkins think the media is too librul.

Gee. Where do you suppose they'd get THAT idea?

:argh:

only I think selfishness or at least self-involvement has as much to do with it as stupidity. And the biggest problem of all: refusal to see evil.

I have a unique perspective on that, I think, because I lived with a sociopath for two years, kept assuming he was basically good and didn't intend to do all the damage he was doing, believing he needed my help, and was nearly ruined. Eventually it came down to me or him, and I had to save myself. Even then I felt sorry and responsible for him. I didn't figure out until later that I had been deliberately scammed.

Then I learned about sociopaths, psychopaths, and narcissists - or narcissisociopsychopaths, as I like to call them, because the criteria are faulty and it's too hard to tell them apart. People who have no conscience and no real feelings, who must observe others in order to mimick emotional behavior and avoid detection, whose basic hatred of others and need for self-gratification or glorification drive them to do incredibly destructive things that are unthinkable to the rest of us.

Now I see them everywhere. The White House is full of them, and now there's one in the California Governor's mansion. The reason Arnold is a bad actor is he doesn't have normal feelings and hasn't quite got the mimicking thing down. The statement about smoke and fire was brilliant. He took the very common sense that should have prevented anyone with a brain from even thinking about voting for him and used it to make himself appear to be a regular human with a conscience. And the voters of California sucked it up like Hoover.

Unfortunately, most people have to be personally and royally screwed over before they begin to get a clue.

Back to the question at hand, I think people continue to believe the media is liberal is because they're not paying attention - i.e., being self-involved. So they accept a popular notion they keep hearing. That's easier than believing the people in power, who got there by deception, are able to use hundreds, thousands, and millions of others as tools.

6. polls like that
should be accompanied by questions like "Do you think the world is flat?" or "are there leprechauns living in your house?"

sorry about the cynical humour, but I am in a cynical mood

7. Most Americans use "liberal" or "conservative" loosely
Americans in general don't like critics who rock the boat. They would rather hold on to their comforting delusions -- "America is the greatest country in the world. Americans are always the good guys. The world envys our freedom. Our enemies only respect force of arms. Tax cuts for the rich create jobs. Blah. Blah. Blah. -- than have to listen to liberal "blame America first."

8. That's because there are no real liberals on the news for them
to get an honest representation of what the liberal media looks like. They think Matthews, Fineman, and Caddell are Liberal. If they really knew how underrepresented Liberals are in the news, they'd begin to understand the underswelling of anger that is developing by a large segment of this population that has been gerrymandered out of the system.

9. Why people consider the media liberal.
Most people consider the media liberal because they associate liberal with being "wish-washy" and conservatives taking stands. The media can't take stands on issues, so they consider the media liberal. This is most evident on social issues. They can't go out and blame anyone for anything or they lose viewers and/or advertisers.

12. If you tell someone something enough times, they'll believe it.
THAT is why people think the media is "liberal". Just look at how often you hear the term "liberal media" from anyone on the right.

People are being conditioned, that's all. The question is, how do we UNCONDITION them?

14. The media is mostly just out for ratings neither left nor right.
I spend a great deal of time correcting people who tell me the media is too liberal. However I have seen to many liberals make asses of themselves trying to do the same thing, they seem to be completely unable to give a quick easy to digest response.

No one in the US gives a rats ass about tin hat screw ball right wing media theories. Just give them Franken numbers like: in 2000 the "liberal" media ran more negative stories about Al Gore. Or would the "liberal" media go after Clinton as much as they did, why don't they do the same for Bush?

If we don't start changing minds, we are screwed.
