In an effort to gain GOP support for Harriet Miers’ appointment, President Bush made a big to-do about her religion. This Supreme Court appointment may be his greatest faith-based initiative yet.

Bush is never a good solo act. And the sight and sound of Bush without Bush’s Brain was both difficult to watch and painful to hear. Bush might actually “Bork” his own nominee. He has split Republicans the way the nomination of John G. Roberts split Democrats in the Senate. The outcome this time won’t be in Miers’ favor. Some social conservatives have launched an inquisition and holy war.

It gets worse for Miers. Columbia Christians for Life, who believe God punished New Orleans with the Killer Katrina Fetus, is circulating Buchanan’s column. Bush ought to worry.

Based on broadcast remarks last week by Attorney General Roberto Gonzales, there is evidence of things unseen. Gonzales identified Miers as pro-life, which usually refers to abortion, not capital punishment. If Rove is Bush’s Brain, does that make Gonzales Bush’s Spleen?
