Mom Wants School-Assigned 'Porn' Novel Banned
Mom Wants School-Assigned 'Porn' Novel Banned

POSTED: 5:39 am EDT October 17, 2005
UPDATED: 7:09 am EDT October 17, 2005

A special panel will meet in Volusia County Monday to begin deliberations about a book assigned to students that at least one woman calls pornography.

In August, the mother of an 11th-grade student in Deland, Vikki Reed, said a 1992 novel, "Cracking India" by Bapsi Sihwal, given to her daughter to read by a Deland High School teacher is not suitable for students and should be banned.

The novel details historic events in India in the 1940s through the eyes of a young girl. However, Reed said it discusses oral sex and should not be assigned to students.

"The real issue is a 9-year-old girl having or being introduced to oral sex by her cousin who is going through puberty," Reed said. "To me, that is totally inappropriate. I don't know where learning about India would involve learning about oral sex."

1. She should try
reading the Bible in the Old Testament. Plenty of sex and war there.

2. Learning about India would involve learning about oral sex.
Isn't that where they invented sword swallowing?

3. So this idiot thinks her 11th-grader doesn't know about oral sex?

8. Great observation!
Funny thing though...you really have to wonder about the parodox.
On EBAY, Dick and Jane books go for about $10.
Little Black Sambo books go for about $40.
What does that reflect as a society?

6. Over 54% of teenagers have had oral sex
which would leave me to believe that most of them have heard about it.

NEW YORK - The findings from a new survey indicate that 54 percent of teenage girls and 55 percent of teenage boys have had oral sex, according to a report released Thursday by The National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy.

The report also shows that oral sex is now more common among teens than sexual intercourse. In fact, about one in four teens who have not had sexual intercourse have experienced oral sex.

But before anyone else says it

IT'S BILL CLINTON'S FAULT!!!!!!!!!!!!
HE MADE ORAL SEX ACCEPTABLE!!!!!!!!!!

So...if this is the case....how many teenagers smoke Cuban cigars?
:silly:

13. Actually...
My friend Mike got a Cuban for us after graduation, and we enjoyed that as a "going away to college" treat. So in my part of the world, Clinton's 2 for 2 in terms of waht he's been blamed for.

7. The point is not what her daughter might or might not know, or even

have done.
The point---and I speak as a recently retired h.s. English teacher who had no problems teaching Chaucer's naughty bits to seniors---I would suspect, is the age of the NOVEL'S characters and the ALLEGED sociological insight of India this scene (or these scense) purports to offer.
It's not like there aren't a thousand other books this teacher could have ordered. This is NOT a First Amendment or Fahrenheit 451 issue.
Oh, and 54% does not equal 100%.

9. You'd like to think so
However, I highly doubt that is what is in question after the indignation that some of these zealots experienced after the Clinton blow job.
It's about sex, that is all. It doesn't matter whether it is adult or child.
These prudes aren't cerebral enough to grasp the significance of the event or the times or why it is a relevant part of the book.

10. I agree - it's more about the age of the child, not what's going on
It's not just oral sex, but probably child sexual abuse that has this mom upset.

Ironically, she's drawing way more attention to this than if she had just let it pass.

Having not read the book, I can't say which side I'd be on. I don't think I've vote for banning it, but perhaps I wouldn't have chosen it had I been the teacher.

11. What's the context?
"...I don't know where learning about India would involve learning about oral sex."

Child prostitution is a problem in India, among other places.

I think the eleventh grade is an appropriate level to learn about that particular horror.

Otherwise, I don't know. It doesn't seem as though Vikki Reed has read the entire book either.

12. Give me a break...
"The real issue is a 9-year-old girl having or being introduced to oral sex by her cousin who is going through puberty," Reed said. "To me, that is totally inappropriate...."

Because we all know that NEVER happens in real life.:eyes:
