Reserves wanting to leave Mideast (says they're there support Brown&Root)

http://www.augustachronicle.com/stories/071203/met_021-6883.000.shtml

First, they heard it would be May. Then they heard June. Then they thought they had a departure date of July 20.

Speaking by cell phone from Kuwait, members of the Augusta-based Army Reserve unit say their extended stay in the desert - and their elusive return date - is having a maddening effect on morale.

--snip--

Soldiers say most of their work involves civilian contractor Kellogg Brown and Root, a subsidiary of Vice President Dick Cheney's former company, Halliburton Corp. The company has contracts to haul fuel, and 319th members are riding along as armed escorts.

"The main reason we're still here is to support Brown and Root," said Sgt. 1st Class David Uthe, 45, of Augusta.

Candidate: Dick Cheney

Halliburton, the Texas company which has been awarded the Pentagon's contract to put out potential oil-field fires in Iraq and which is bidding for postwar construction contracts, is still making annual payments to its former chief executive, the vice-president Dick Cheney.

The payments, which appear on Mr Cheney's 2001 financial disclosure statement, are in the form of "deferred compensation" of up to $1m ( 600,000) a year.

1. That's What Our Soldiers Have Historically Done
Our soldiers have been guarding the pipelines of multi-national Occidental Petroleum in Colombia since Bush became President.

That's the history of our nation. The children of the poor risking their lives to protect the assetts of the ruling classes.

Our soldiers, at great risk to their lives, lingered in Asia near Kamchatka long after World War I to protect assetts of J.P. Morgan and to harrass the new revolutionary government in Russia.

add cost of military protection to cost of oil/gas
When we consider the cost of oil and other fossil fuels that require continued military support to exist, we should be factoring that cost in to the cost at the pump, for example.

it is an argument that shifts the "affordabiity" of fossil fuels into a less favorable position relative to alternative energy.

It is also another example of the taxpayer funding the profits of certain protected corporations.

5. "The company has contracts to haul fuel"?
Edited on Wed Jul-16-03 02:52 PM by Divernan
Well, here's a hidden cost of privatization that the Republicans will not want to acknowledge! I want to know what kind of "fuel" is being hauled, who it's being delivered to, and the purpose for which it's being used. The advantage of a no-bid contract, is that little provisions like the Army providing unpaid employees to the private contractor will not be made available to the public. There is supposed to be some kind of written contract/agreement covering this situation. What the hell happens if a soldier is injured/wounded while on this duty? He won't get workmen's comp from Haliburton - that's for sure. He'll be on the public dole for SSI his whole life, so we the public can pay that cost as well.
The Bush administration - going where no political interest group has dared go before. Can anyone think of any private company on private business (oil) having the benefit of government paid employees working for them "off the books" so to speak?
ON EDIT: Just read Post # one above - I'm offended, flabbergasted, amazed! Our troops guarding private oil pipelines? If we would just have had a free press in this country to report on such things!

6. Bush is using our soldiers as security guards for Cheney's corporation
Our soldiers are getting killed everyday, and Bush and Cheney are laughing all the way to the bank.

They both belong in prison.

7. Absolutely.
We are "protecting America's interests." Meaning, property interests. Corporate interests.

Meanwhile, the corporations show their gratitude by moving offshore to avoid paying taxes.

IRA estimates of tax revenue lost to US companies moving offshore, just to Bermuda: Relocated U.S. companies in Bermuda alone cost the U.S. Internal Revenue Service an estimated US$70 billion in lost tax revenue each year. http://www.conway.com/ssinsider/snapshot/sf020624.htm That is enough money to fix the budget shortfalls in the 46 states that are experiencing such dire straits.

So, let's get this perfectly straight. The working and middle class provide the tax money. (The upper class pays taxes at about the same percentage as the middle class.) The working class provides the cannon fodder. And, the corporate interests profit. And sleeze out of paying for the war. (Enron did not pay federal taxes in the last 4 of 5 years it was operating, even while it was claiming to be incredibly profitable.)

And, in even more irony, we went to Iraq partly for oil, right? Well, guess who is one of the biggest oil users in the world? Yup, the US military. While some of us are at least trying to conserve at home, they are running jets and ships and ground ops like crazy, at "our" 130 locations around the world.

Some have suggested replacing our stars & stripes with a flag decorated with the logos of Exxon, GE, Coke, and the rest -- would be more honest.

9. Have our military ever done anything else?
Their prime mission is to protect the interests of Multinational Corporations. Even the ones who go off-shore to avoid taxes. Bush-Cheney are not runninbg this country for its citizens. They are using it for their own personal gain. Bush went to Texas with a few thousand dollars. As Texas Governor that grew to millions. By the time he leaves the WH he will be a billionaire.
