Bush on the Constitution: 'It's just a goddamned piece of paper'

Last month, Republican Congressional leaders filed into the Oval Office to meet with President George W. Bush and talk about renewing the controversial USA Patriot Act.

....

GOP leaders told Bush that his hardcore push to renew the more onerous provisions of the act could further alienate conservatives still mad at the President from his botched attempt to nominate White House Counsel Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court.

“I don’t give a goddamn,” Bush retorted. “I’m the President and the Commander-in-Chief. Do it my way.”

“Mr. President,” one aide in the meeting said. “There is a valid case that the provisions in this law undermine the Constitution.”

“Stop throwing the Constitution in my face,” Bush screamed back. “It’s just a goddamned piece of paper!”

but I suspect there is a grain of truth in them.

5. Yes but how could that be done? Bush/Cheney came into office pulling
the shades and drawing the curtains.

I mean assuming there is something to corroborate, the closest we might get is Helen Thomas posing the question to Scotty in the morning gaggle.

11. Well given that he has actually said on three different occasions
how much easier it would be if he were a dictator, I can well imagine the little worm saying something just like this.

22. Three people fromt he meeting corroborated
CHB says that they sourced this line with THREE people in the same meeting. How else would you corroborate this? Interview the fly on the wall???

7. This is certainly impeachment material! Why isn't this headline news?
How can this be proven and submitted for investigation....I just sent my senator, Orrin Hatch, a copy of the article and that I fully expect him to look into this and if true, begin impeachment proceedings immediately, and if not true, begin action against its author...

This really pisses me off to no end...not to mention his constant use of the Lord's name in vain.

8. Because a very iffy outfit, CHB, is reporting it with NO corroboration.
Any media outfit would be a fool to report it.

10. I view Thompson's rants on CHB
as a guilty pleasure... I don't particularly put stock in the stories (though I don't think it is unbelievable, but that has more to do with my view of bush as a megalomaniac than anything else) - but I sure enjoy reading the items (as in - wouldn't it be great if this were real and were really breaking into the media and the public psyche). Ah - sue me.

12. Same here
I enjoy his irreverant shots at Bush* but I wouldn't "take them to the bank"

We can only wish the reports are real and that they will be exposed for all the world to see. :hi:

13. “F--- Saddam,” Bush said. “We’re taking him out.”

http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article2835.htm

“F--- Saddam,” Bush said. “We’re taking him out.” March 2002

In the latest sign of a troubled American democracy, a large majority of U.S. citizens now say they wouldn’t mind if no weapons of mass destruction are found in Iraq, though it was George W. Bush’s chief rationale for war. Americans also don’t seem to mind that Bush appears to have deceived them for months when he claimed he hadn’t made up his mind about invading Iraq.

As he marched the nation to war, Bush presented himself as a Christian man of peace who saw war only as a last resort. But in a remarkable though little noted disclosure, Time magazine reported that in March 2002 – a full year before the invasion – Bush outlined his real thinking to three U.S. senators, “Fuck Saddam,” Bush said. “We’re taking him out.”

Time actually didn’t report the quote exactly that way. Apparently not to offend readers who admire Bush’s moral clarity, Time printed the quote as “F--- Saddam. We’re taking him out.”

Bush offered his pithy judgment after sticking his head in the door of a White House meeting between National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice and three senators who had been discussing strategies for dealing with Iraq through the United Nations. The senators laughed uncomfortably at Bush’s remark, Time reported.

I take CHB heavily salted, but wouldn't be surprised if there's truth there...

17. That's what Bush* has
going for him.....

pure audacity....

Normal, politically unaware, common, everyday ordinary citizens will NEVER believe that anybody, much less their pResident, could have the audacity to LIE, CHEAT AND STEAL the way this administration does.

Americans are still naive enough to believe in the 8th Grade Civics Class model of an American President....you know, moral to a fault, dark circles under the eyes from lying awake at night worrying about the fate of the country, making heroic decisions for the good of the country at the cost of his own political advantage.....we were spoon-fed that pap from the time we were old enough talk...we bought it...hook, line and sinker...

now...

try to convince Mr & Mrs Middle America that it was bull... see if they buy the truth.

Audacity.

with a capital "A"

21. It says in the article that they verified the line
with three sources who were in the meeting.

Not just one guy in a smoky bar, but THREE people gave the same account. That's a bit more credible.
How else would you suggest that they corroborate an allegation such as this other than by getting verification from others in the same meeting? Please. Do tell, Mr. Star Reporter.

23. So, CHB is less reliable than...the NY Times?
Sorry, but I take EVERY story I see with a hill of salt. I trust CHB no more or no less than I do the NYT, the WP, CNN, ABC, CBS...you name it.

Why do people continue to give credence to the major news outlets who have been PROVEN beyond a shadow of a doubt to being propagandists for bushco while immediately dismissing CHB and other publications whose record of accuracy is no worse than the major media and - in many cases - better than the MSM?

9. This comment from an applicant to the University of Texas Law School
in Austin (which turned down *'s application).

I can only imagine this attitude in his constitutional law class reflecting the same callousness he displayed during his MBA program in Harvard wherein he called Social Security a piece of "socialism" and incongruent with American values.
