OMG, Mel Gibson for Governor?
Just heard on AAR that some Repuke is setting up a petition to run Mel Gibson for governor and dump Arnold.

Gibson would be worse than Arnold, especially for women's rights.

2. Going from an Austrian to an Australian
Sounds like the GOP is running of homegrown nuts. Whatever happened to: "Made in the USA?"

7. Mel Gibson was made in the USA - he was raised in Australia
There's no way he'd win. He has been too actively homophobic and gay rights is
very important to a lot of people in California.

8. Well I don't want him back
Let him stay in Australia.
Actually, doesn't it sound like the GOP is scraping the bottom of the barrell? Do they really think people are that stupid?

21. yes, they do think we're that stupid
Unfortunately, they used Arnie's popularity among Latino men to win California last time,
so we were that stupid.

Gibson lives in the US now (which is why he has no accent), but if they're floating movie
stars as political material? That's only gonna go so far.

3. No kidding
Somehow, I don't see CA going for it. The only reason the pugs got their recall through was because Gray Davis really wasn't very good.

Of course, we did give the country Raygun.

9. Hmm...
Kind of explains his recent remarks on Iraq. Stating he did not know why we were over there; those are not exact quotes. I guess they are trying to push him off as moderate. I don't think it's going to fly this time.

10. Action Hero gimmick only worked with Arnold cause he's not a rightwingnut.
They look to a Hollywood Gimmick to help sell their despicable agenda.

Gimmick
From Wiped, the free encyclopedia.
Jump to: navigation, search

A gimmick is a unique or quirky special feature that makes something "stand out" from its contemporaries. Product gimmicks are sometimes considered mere novelties, and not really that relevant to the product's functioning, even earning negative connotations. However, some seemingly trivial gimmicks of the past have evolved into useful, permanent features.

Finding a successful gimmick for an otherwise mundane product is often an important part of the marketing process. For example, toothbrushes are often given various gimmicks, such as bright colors, easy-grip handles, or color-changing bristles so they appear more exciting to consumers. This is often done when trying to appeal to children, who often get more excited about the gimmick than the product.

12. Really, has there ever been
an actor of either political party who had a successful term in any political office?

Closest I can think of are Fred Grandy, Sonny Bono, and Fred Thompson (although I think he was actually a politician who became and actor rather than the reverse). These were "successes" only in the sense that they didn't do anything too bad, but none were particularly memorable.

Anyone else?

13. I encourage Mr Gibson to challenge Ahnuld
as a 3rd party candidate. Gibson could stand a little public exposure. I remember seeing him on some show and he came across as a loony tune of the first rank. Also IIRC the reason he went to Australia in the first place was to avoid the draft during the Vietnam war. If that little tidbit is true and was pubicized it would do wonders for Gibson's image (and his campaign). Any Dem would look good next to these two wackos.

Gibson for Governor?
By WENN|Friday, December 09, 2005

HOLLYWOOD - Actor Mel Gibson has been tipped by some Californian Republicans as the next showbiz governor of the state, in a bid to oust increasingly unpopular Arnold Schwarzenegger from office.

snip...
Mike Spence, mastermind of the Gibson Internet campaign and president of the state's Republican Assembly, says, "We have to look for alternatives to the governor because he's been behaving like someone who wants to go back to Hollywood."

And Spence is eager to see Gibson as that replacement, praising the political credentials of films like The Passion of the Christ and his outspoken views on stem cell research.

He adds, "He's shown himself to be both fiscally and socially conservative, and the success of The Passion of the Christ shows that he has the ability to reach out to people.

have to offer someone with star power for their candidate. I believe with Republican and swing voters, it's probably true. I sometimes think the Democratic Party should do the same thing. I mean part of Grey Davis's problem was that he was so colorless.

How about George Clooney, or Warren Beatty against Mel Gibson or Arnold? I say play the game with their rules and win.

17. Lets see, homophobic, anti-semitic, yeah he stands a
chance in Ca. :eyes: I tried to give him a break on the anti-semitic thing but I read an interview with him the other day, where he claimed that "tens of millions of people died in WWII, some were Jews in camps, but when asked about his fathers views, he gave a telling answer "My father never lied to me". Considering his father is a holocaust denier I will take that to mean he thinks there really was no holocaust. Now he wants to make a mini-series on the Holocaust on ABC. For what Mel? To prove you aren't full of shit? Ass.

20. Don't forget women's issues.
Not only is he rabidly pro-life, but he's against birth control as well. He has eight or nine kids (lost count) and he can afford them, but what about the average Jill and Joe who can't?

22. And reportedly he believes Prostestants are going to Hell. Heaven's for
Catholics only:

Gibson was interviewed by the Herald Sun in Australia, and the reporter asked the star if Protestants are denied eternal salvation. “There is no salvation for those outside the Church,” Gibson replied. “I believe it.”

He elaborated: “Put it this way. My wife is a saint. She’s a much better person than I am. Honestly. She’s, like, Episcopalian, Church of England. She prays, she believes in God, she knows Jesus, she believes in that stuff. And it’s just not fair if she doesn’t make it, she’s better than I am. But that is a pronouncement from the chair. I go with it.” http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4224452/

That will go over well with the fundies, LOL.
