''I think people want a new style of anchorman,. . ."

http://www.boston.com/ae/media/articles/2005/12/15/could_couric_bring_new_life_to_third_place_cbs_news/?rss_id=Boston+Globe+--+Living+/+Arts+News

Could Couric bring new life to third-place CBS News?

-snip-

Although Couric, whose NBC contract expires in May, isn't granting interviews on the topic, the industry is abuzz with debate about whether the 48-year-old could be the hook that draws new and younger viewers to a third-place newscast in a troubled time period.

''I think people want a new style of anchorman, something more informal and not an omniscient voice," said Tom Rosenstiel, director of Columbia University's Project for Excellence in Journalism. ''Katie could bring that stylistic difference that could be compelling to viewers."

Jon Friedman, media editor for MarketWatch.com, disagrees. In an open letter to Les Moonves, the president of Viacom (which owns CBS), Friedman recently implored Moonves not to hire ''America's sweetheart" but to invent a new star. ''I'd have a hard time imagining her as a network's point person in the aftermath of a major tragedy -- even if she wore those professional reading glasses she sports," Friedman said.

if Katie gets the job will she still be called an 'anchorman'. what happened to anchorwoman and anchorpeople?

wonder if Maureen's article prompted this? (can a mommy deliver convincing critical news?)

1. She's no journalist - she's a sycophant
More Cronkites, Murrows, and Amanpours, please - less of the fluff.

5. Yes, why wasn't Christine Amanpour offered the job?
She's a real journalist and she has the star power to bring in all kinds of viewers. I really can't take perky Katie in big doses.

12. ! Absolutely !
I'm in total agreement with you on both. Maybe they just don't want everyone on the planet (with a brain) to watch their newscast.

2. I don't care how much you sugarcoat a turd
it still stinks. It doesn't matter who delivers this propaganda, what they need is a new attitude toward the government bullshit they get fed constantly, and a better understanding of the press's role in a free society.

15. Thank you! Putting icing on a dog turd doesn't make it a wedding cake . .
And foisting Perky Katie on the viewing public during the evening, rather than during the morning, isn't going to suddenly make her Edward R. Frickin' Murrow.

16. They're basically just 2 hours of commercials anyway.
The "talent" is always promoting products like i-pods,x-boxes and upcoming movies. Yay-something to look forward to at CBS. Imagine...Perky Katie trying to do a dance routine with Debbie Allen John Roberts will be making a chef on a shoestring meal for under 35.00 (Mmmmmm smells great John!) Bill Plante will speculate on the baby names for Brittney's next baby. Ahhhhh...it smells like teen spirit.

You know, Mapes is probably lucky she got out when she did. This holiday season, may the president of CBS be visited by the ghosts journalists past.

14. Perky!
News? This is only brainless entertainment. This is news on a par with Reader's Digest Condensed Books. News for people who can't think for themselves!
