If any of you say anything bad about Johnny Cash, I will personally kick your ass :P

Seriously, tho -- passion here is at an all-time high.

I wish we could bottle it, and/or mass produce it.

2. thicker skin is what we should mass produce
most of the "passion" involves tit-for-tat hair pulling and scratching stuff and not brilliant declamatory prose full of fitty-cent words like my self-important and preening oratario.

:P

6. ((Bending over.))
Johnny Cash came to our NCO Club at Long Binh in '69 and gave a 'concert' that included June Carter. I, along with about 25% of those there, walked out after the first 10-15 minutes. He was disgusting. Totally. Besides dropping f-bombs every 10 seconds, he engaged in the kind of brain-dead, nasty derision of officers and NCOs that only those with a cartoonish comprehension of military people perceive. Even in Viet Nam, we had better things to do than sit and listen to a foul-mouthed asshole. Up until that time, I'd thought Johnny Cash was decent music and experienced in the "school of hard knocks." He portrayed himself as clueless and immature.

18. He was all durgged out during that period
The movie (Walk the Line) is mostly about his drug problems and how June helped him get past it all.

23. Well, he could've mailed in his performance and done better.
He was clearly under the influence of something. I give no person a 'free pass' for displays of malice and perversion just because they're intoxicated. If anything, the removal of inhibitions permits a more honest portrayal of underlying corruptions. During the 30 years or so that I drank, I never displayed any 'personality changes' - something that gave me solace that I wasn't repressing some 'dark side.' During the 12 years that we were married, even my wife (a light, social drinker) could never really tell when I was moderately drunk - something that made her a bit uneasy - because I never got nasty or belligerent.

Cash displayed a nasty, belligerent, malicious personality. Fuck 'im.

The venue, our NCO Club at Long Binh, held perhaps 200-250 people. At least 60 of us walked out, not in some mass, coordinated move but individually getting up and leaving all over the club. It was remarkable.

Anyway, yes it's true: you can have a flamewar about ANYTHING on DU. Just state an opinion (Oh, say "apples taste good") and within an hour, you will have a 70+post thread explaing why a)oranges are better, b) you shouldn't eat apples because of pesticides, c) apples are often red, and we should always buy blue, and d) Kerry is a waffler.

And I read "In Cold Blood" many years ago.
