By the way - the House voted to stop overtime

for millions of americans. They say the Senate will also pass it.

But you still will have to work overtime but just get time off for it instead of money. you know, the stuff that pays the bills.

And Dick Gephardt wasn't present...so much for being the "Unions' Candidate"!

EVERY other presidential candidate ought to call him on this--even Lieberman!

6. Will unions drop Gephardt over this? I doubt it.
It seems to story is more complicated than the anti-Gephardt people want to admit.

First of all, the House DID NOT vote to end overtime - that is a lie.

So if I can't vote Gephardt anymore, who should I vote for? The Pro-NAFTA Kerry or Dean? I don't think so.

9. corporations were for it; unions against it
this issue has been lurking for several weeks to months now. A few weeks ago, the estimate was that 8,000,000 workers would lose overtime pay. They are either reclassified as "executives" or "exempt" personnel or they are given comp time instead.

While the GOP sponsor of the bill said comp time was an option that many workers wanted, just think about it for a second. If your company mandates overtime week after week after week, when exactly are you going to be able to USE that comp time? Never.

The company can deny your comp time request for like 18 months, and they only have to "pay" it out on a 1:1 ratio. So, where you used to get time and half for overtime, you now get equal time off, which can be denied for months on end. The business saves lots of money because they don't have to pay you and they can deny your time off for a year and a half.

8. wow - 213 to 210 vote
I guess the absences DID matter - usually in the House, the votes aren't this close and absences aren't crucial. Guess a few Dems really blew it on this one. Too bad for millions of low-wage Americans who are about to become "executives" on paper, yet remain low-level, over-time working employees in reality.

11. You young people better start organizing into guilds and unions.
It's the only thing that will save you. Other than that look at third world poverty the way things are going.

The web is a good place to start organizing workers of similar skills and occupations. The Corporate repukes want everything thrown out on the marketplace, then let them deal with a coalition of worker who can hammer out the best deal for them collectively.

Start with the service workers. Even though they can outsource factory work overseas, they can't outsource service work unless they change the immigration laws. It's time to start fighting for your labor rights if nothing else.
