Street is now in position to win
Mayor Street got a big lift yesterday as two new polls showed him opening a double-digit lead in the last week of his reelection campaign, and the Rev. Jesse Jackson urged audiences to stand up for a mayor who has stood up for the disadvantaged.

Street led Republican challenger Sam Katz by 17 points, 54 percent to 37 percent, among likely voters, according to a poll released yesterday by KYW-TV (Channel 3), KYW-AM (1060) and Temple University. Nine percent of respondents were undecided; the survey had a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

The Inquirer Poll, conducted last week and released Sunday, found Street with 46 percent and Katz with 41 percent; the margin of error was plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

In Smith's September poll, which Katz led narrowly, Street was supported by 74 percent of black respondents. In the poll two weeks ago, 85 percent of blacks were backing Street. In yesterday's survey, the mayor had 93 percent of black voters behind him.
=======================================================================

My gut tells me that Street wins now 53-47 or 52-48.

But, whether it is by 1,000 votes, or 100,000 votes, I see Street winning here.

Katz and the GOP seriously mishandled the bug issue. Not necessarily a fan but don't want to see Katz in office helping Bush next year.

1. Yeah, he may win
But, he's still a crook. And he's a bigger crook than Katz.
It's all very well talking about how if Katz wins it's going to help * back into the White House, But, fact of the matter is that this (Philadelphia and I speak as a long time resident) is a Democratic town. Whoever wins the mayors office is not going to make the slightest difference in the 2004 election. That's why I've got a sign in my window that says 'Democrats for Katz'.
Why do you think that is? Well, to answer my own question, I've watched John Street for the past 20 years. He's done nothing that is for the good of this city. His main ambition has been to get into the mayors office. And to paraphrase Phil Ochs, 'Now that he's the mayor, he's not really the mayor.'
He has done more to keep machine politics in this city than anyone since the 19th century. And now he's going to win the election by playing the race card. The man is shameless and has had his snout in the public trough for his entire career. Without Johnny Doch and his bully boys, (who won't allow black electricians into their lily white union) Street would be back running a sandwich truck on North Broad Street with his brother Milton.

2. Not a fan of Street
But Katz would help Bush. And I am so digusted with Bush that I would hold my nose and vote for Street in Phila.

6. Street Is Innocent Unless Proven Guilty
and apparently the bugs in his office didn't catch Street doing anything wrong.

7. I'll say it again
Street is a crook.
He's treated this this city as his own personal fiefdom ever since he took elective office. He's admitted it himself - although the exact words escape me - that in order to be heard in the Mayors office or in City Council, you have to contribute. "Pay to Play" should have been one of the big issues of this mayoral race and instead we get a bogus race card based media circus, complete with accusations of dirty tricks all round. ( For anyone who doesn't know, there are NO limits on political contributions for Philadelphia elections - and every time the issue comes up, it gets shot down by the incumbents).
The man was a nightmare as City Council President and he's been a nightmare as mayor. Every chance he's had to move the city forward he has fumbled. And now, because people are afraid that a vote for Katz is a vote for Bush, Philadelphia is going to again flush itself down the toilet. Because Street is going to continue 'pay for play', he's going to continue his kissy face tactics with the corrupt local unions and he's going to call everyone who disagrees with him a racist.
I'm probably not going to vote for either of them. Or I'll hold my nose and vote for Katz. He, at least, has promised to end 'pay for play' in Philadelphia. and for that he deserves the mayors office.

3. Street has a second chance to clean up his act if he gets elected.
He should remember what happened to Davis.

4. That would be a huge relief.
He'd have added GOTV machinery to contribute for the 2004 election. If we can get turnout up in Philadelphia, we can win the whole state.
