Koppel to Powell (Nightline): The administration flat-ass wrong on Iraq?
Edited on Sat Nov-01-03 12:59 AM by LittleApple81
about some of the lies as misstatements. Koppel was pretty good.

Edited to say ABC and change the heading; needs to attract the west coasters attention, I guess.

2. Do you mean, by that
that he actually challenged some of Powell's talking points?

5. My mistake. Should be in bed by now, I guess!
I loved the ending. Koppel concluded the program by mentioning that Schwartzeneger in California had promised to deal with the groping accusations after he got elected and now says that it is no longer relevant. Koppel said that Bush's government is taking the same approach to all the wrong statements about Iraq. He called it the Schwartzenegerization of government policy. This last comment does not appear here but there is a summary of Powells statement here:

6. Koppel's exact words to Powell: "So, you were Flat-Ass Wrong?"
Edited on Sat Nov-01-03 01:02 AM by VolcanoJen
It was a monumental moment, I'm telling you. My jaw dropped to the floor as Koppel said that, and then continued with something like "By your smile, I can tell you didn't expect me to come at you with that." Powell replied, a little nervously and put-off, with something like "The Secretary of State doesn't respond with such, profanity."

I wish I could remember exactly what Powell said, and I'm sure a transcript will be available soon. What blew me off the couch, though, was Koppel saying, "So, you were Flat-Ass wrong?"

Koppel's exit editorial was spot-on too, highlighting four ways in which the Administration essentially was "Flat-Ass Wrong:"

1. They were wrong about the imminent threat of WMD's;

2. They were wrong that Iraqis would "welcome us with open arms;" that it would be a "cakewalk;"

3. They were wrong when they said the reconstruction would be paid for with Iraqi oil revenues;

4. That the Iraq War would lead to resolution in the "Roadmap to Peace" between Israel and Palestine.

It was mindblowing, and I'm so glad I got home just in time to tune in.

- Jennifer

12. Blew me away, too. Powell could only change subjects as slick as Willie.
I think he said something like the sec of state is not able to speak so 'graphically' as Koppel had put it.

He was also splitting intel hairs with chilling echoes, this time over 'is saddam hoozat in charge or whatever' v. NYT article today.

Fer sure worth a west coast look.

16. I think the word Powell used was "graphically"
I've been going nuts trying to remember if he referred to Koppel's comments as "vulgarity" or "profanity." I think "graphically" was the word; thanks, TacticalPeak!

I do hope West Coasters tune in and give us their thoughts! It was one firecracker of a Nightline.

18. Dixie Chicks
Everyone at DU should buy the latest Dixie Chicks CD as a sign of support to the band, but also as statement to the right wing. I wish a million of their CDs would sell in one weekend.

25. Koppel called Ashcroft's Patriotic Act
a "boneheaded" idea a few months ago. I watched this guy turn against the Bush empire over the last 6 months as he realizes the whole war was a big f-ing lie.

26. What was so cool
was Ted did not change the tone or tenor of his voice when he said, So, you were flat-ass wrong.

Powell did seem a little taken aback when he responded w/, A Secretary of State is not permitted to speak in graphic terms as you are.

Ted's closing comments keep getting better and better.

Just as arnold's groping problems are no longer relevant, after he's in, so are all of the reasons we invaded Iraq.
