I think Saddam's capture will have no effect on any candidate
Not any kind of long-term effect anyway.

Since Saddam's capture I've been hearing a lot about how this completely changes the playing field, how Bush's re-election chances have increased dramatically, you know the drill --- we've been hearing this stuff constantly since Sunday.

Quite frankly, I don't see it. I think this will give Bush the same bump in the polls as he got from the Thanksgiving Poultry Incident, which will disappear not long after, particularly if the fighting continues in Iraq, which I firmly expect to be the case.

Am I off base here? I am just not seeing this as Bush's express train to re-election. I am not even sure that it's a express train to a few weeks of polling above 55%.

I am interested to know what everyone else thinks about this. I don't want to be in a spider web of denial.

2. I think exactly as you do
There is too great a mess for anybody to be beguiled by this capture for very long. Initial noise will have a quick fade. A trial will bring out too much they don't want known to be a publicity boon for the WH. None of it works for them.

3. I don't know if it will even go to trial
Maybe I'm just being EXTREMELY cynical, but I fully expect a Jack Ruby of some sort to come along and dispose of Hussein before he ever gets to trial. He has the goods on too many people who are currently in power for me to believe that they honestly want to try him.

But basically, yes I agree with you fully. This will be forgotten as soon as the next Paris Hilton video comes out, or the next season of American Idol starts.
