the Democratic nominee should take a page from the playbook of (God forgive me) George Pataki. Mario Cuomo didn't debate him in 1994, so Pataki just stood at a podium (with an empty one next to him) and fielded questions from the moderators. Needless to say, he was able to say all kinds of off the wall shit about Cuomo, who was not there to rebut him. I don't know how big a role it had in Cuomo losing that election, but let's just say it didn't look good.
