Margaret Cho bashes Bush; defends Dean
12/15/2003
Public Enemy #1
http://margaretcho.com/blog/blog.htm

Okay, we got him. Under the Styrofoam, beneath the rug, in a spider hole, and he came out looking like a crazy homeless man, or former President James Garfield, however you choose to see it. Saddam Hussein is caught, in what might have well been a grave, because he was lying underneath the earth breathing from a tube, without high speed internet access, no ranch dressing, knowing he is missing all the great holiday parties, what hell must be like. I have been watching on the news channels, the footage over and over and over and on and on 'til the break of dawn, they keep looking in his mouth, picking through his hair. He just looks like one of the patients in "Awakenings" who wouldn't wake up no matter what Robin Williams would do. Then, there are the makeover pictures, before spider hole, after spider hole. I am fully aware of Saddam Hussein's evil reign, and I believe that his capture is righteous, in that there is a need for humanity to avenge and bring the enemy at large to justice, but where will this justice land? What justice will serve us as Americans? Please know that the capture of this heinous murderer is something that I do agree is a long time coming, but this is going to fucking make it look like President George "Dumb and Dubya" Bush went down into that dirty grave himself and dragged him out by that long, white Rip Van Winkle beard. It builds up Bush like Indiana DUMBFUCK Jones, and he is not. He did not go out there with a bullwhip and a leather bomber jacket and kick anybody's ass. Okay, he snuck out and went to eat some turkey with the troops, a weird thing anyway because he went without telling anyone and you are not supposed to do that when you are MARRIED WITH A FAMILY let alone President. Bush is not a hero. He didn't do shit. He did not do shit. Shit. He did not do it.

Then the attacks on Howard Dean are totally out of line because here we have the right wing AND THE LEFT WING WHO BE IGNANT saying that if Dean would have it, Saddam would still be in power. That is ridiculous. ALL DEAN WAS TALKING ABOUT WAS BEING AGAINST THE WAR!!!!! See, the Pat Buchanans of the world will paint the numbers and make a masterpiece out of this because it is something that will fit into a perfect mouth sized sound bite and make everyone vote for Bush again like idiots (or at least try to vote but get their votes uncounted because they rig elections don't you know) but really, it is like saying Dean was looking at the sky, commenting that it might rain, and contemplating bringing an umbrella or a jacket, as he is a doctor and concerns himself about such matters, and then suggesting others to do the same, then suddenly there was an earthquake and then they all got all over Dean's back because they were not in a doorway because they were looking for an umbrella. Fuck it, that was not a perfect analogy, not one I would be proud of later, not one I am going to be putting on the book jacket, but you get my drift. At least I hope you do. It was not our right to have become the world's bully and start this war in the first place. If this war truly was to free the people of Iraq, then the war should have been started over a quarter of a century ago. If this was about saving Iraq for the emancipation of the Iraqi people, not the oil, then Saddam would be a long forgotten name. Shah anyone?

What it boils down to is this - the conservatives are going to take this feather out of Saddam's ass and put it in their duncecap, and where is that going to leave us? Capture or no capture, Bush still thinks that same sex marriage should be illegal. Bush still thinks that we need to preach abstinence to high school students as opposed to telling them what to do with the reality of sex. Bush still thinks that the Spanish language is called "talkin' Mexican." Bush still believes that abortion is wrong and therefore not the choice of the individual woman involved, but that his jurisdiction includes everyone and they mama's uterus. Bush still stands by the edict that even if about 10% (more like 90% if there were lesbians involved) of the soldiers who were responsible for the capture of Saddam Hussein, are homosexuals, he has the nerve to uphold "Don't ask, don't tell." Abomination, that he would do this and still call himself a hero. And that the media would back him like he was. In the next few days there will be personalities emerging from this drama and we will find out the who what why when where of the constant barrage of news and the ever present scroll underneath that will inform us of random shit - so we cannot fully ever understand either what is onscreen or running under, the names of the men and women who were the heart of this operation. I know there was lesbians though. The dykes do you a mean Hide and Seek and they do not play.

Bush still did not win the presidential election four years ago. He stole the votes, ransacked public opinion, discounting an entire community of people that would have voted against him, many of them Black Americans who would rather have "The Dukes of Hazzard" back on the air than see Bush on the ballot. He is a thief and a liar and uses God's name like they got thug love, like they grew up together in the 'hood. Bush still believes in the integration of church and state, which is antithetical to why this nation was born in the first place. Bush still is our own worst foe - and now that Saddam has been caught, that shoots him up the charts to Public Enemy #1.

1. Who ?
OK I realize who she is, a comic whose star never quite hit the firmament.

Point is, who cares.

Gerald Ford would be noteworthy.

6. I find it a little troubling that we're quoting commedians so much
and not people with legitimate political opinion. Growing up is what needs to happen but not with me.

7. Sorry you think comedians aren't/can't be political
Obviously, you've never heard of Lenny Bruce, George Carlin, or Bill Hicks. Far as I'm concerned, their "legitimate political opinion" counts more than yours.

11. commedians have been making money off pols for ever
Lenny Bruce's influence was limited at best and more a sign of the times than anything else. Carlin hangs around because of his comedic variety, not opinion pieces. Can't say I've heard of Hicks.

I never make any claims that my opinions matter to anyone other than myself. And you are welcome to value any opinion you wish.

17. Bill Hicks is exactly who we need right now. Too bad he's dead.
He would have torn bu$h and his people a new one every single night. He was the funniest (and crudest) comic I ever saw or ever will see. He died of cancer sometime around 1994.

14. Arrg...that's what I was gonna say
Add Twain and Dickens. Some of the most important social change has filtered through our artists. Hell, even MY political opinion is "legitimate"!

Actually its the comtemporary Dickens or Twain that I was hoping we could do a better job of making note of.

5. hrmm...
Actually Margaret Cho is in the top tier of stand-up comics in America today. When she tours, she doesn't play the local Giggles Komedy Klub... she plays large theaters. And sells out consistently.

You don't have to like her, but she's probably in the top 1% of working standups.

13. I actually DO like her comedy
and she may very well be in the top 10% but I doubt 1% or we would see more of her.

Thanks for posting. I always liked Margaret's brand of comedy and she is so much better when she's being political.

So funny - thanks for posting. I've seen Cho's work so many times, when I read this I can hear her voice saying it.

19. I don't think I've ever listened to an unfunnier comic
Edited on Wed Dec-17-03 12:54 AM by Bombtrack
And this has nothing to do with anything pro or anti-Dean, she's been around for over a decade and hasn't made me or anyone I know laugh once.

she makes recent Dennis Miller material look like hearing George Carlin while you're on Nitrous Oxide
