55. Why do Americans have this bizarre notion that beiong opposed to war
is weak? They are endlessly qualifying their opposition to warring. It requires far more strength and courage NOT to wage war. It requires painstaking dreary intense labor to prevent war. Someone like Kucinich has ten times the strength to oppose war than to take the easy way and wage war.

what exactly these people gave their lives for.

It's hard to recall the reasons... wmds? getting Saddam? 911? Iraqi Freedom? what is the mission and when will it finally be achieved?

9. what make this so extraordinarily disturbing . . .
Edited on Mon Jan-05-04 02:51 AM by OneBlueSky
is that not one of these deaths was necessary . . . they were, in fact, the very direct result of lies told by our government, lies that continue to this day . . . this is a crime by anyone's definition, for which Bush and Company must someday be held accountable . . . stopping Bush from doing any more damage and bringing him to account for for his actions are what next year's election is ultimately about . . .

my local paper updates the death list daily with bios and photos . . . it's what I read while having my morning coffee . . . breakfast has been giving me a lot of upset stomachs lately . . . and a lot of other people as well, I would guess . . . one of the few things we have going for us next year that there are an awful lot of these folks, and they vote . . .

48. We now have over 500 reasons to vote
and the reasons keep growing. We cannot let these deaths be in vain, no more than the lies that perpetuated these poor souls to be sacrificed in the name of Bu$hco.

12. A young soldier spent xmas here with us
My son's best friend, on leave for the holiday. He's been in the army for 2 years, and we only see him at Christmas. He hasn't been overseas yet; it looks like he'll go sometime this spring. We talked about his plans for post-military service, and whether or not he would be discharged when the time he signed up for is done.

He already knows he won't be discharged; that the future is a big question mark. He gave me a hug when he left; I looked at him and told him to stay safe. He looked right back and promised to do his best.

I do not want to see any more names on that list. Not even one.

19. excelent post
I had a chance to get to DC this summer, and took a walk up the mall by myself and went to The Wall.

I found myself asking the same question that your caption reads. "have we learned anything" was more what I kept asking myself, even as I heard small children talking sh*t about France (no kidding!). I couldn't believe it, and I wanted to weep. I was never so confused as to what it was to be an American. I had many beliefs but I was beginning to feel outnumbered.

On my walk back to my hotel Bush flew overhead in his helicopter, and did a couple of circles around the Washington Monument. At that moment I realized that no failed oil executive a few hundred feet above me could fool all the people all the time - and that someday - a President like me would be flying above a memorial to those whose names are listed above and have fallen in Iraq.

The only hope is that by then we finally will have learned, and some 22 year old below me will have pride in his country again.

Dulce Et Decorum Est

by Wilfred Owen

First Published in 1921

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned out backs,
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots,
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame, all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of gas-shells dropping softly behind.

Gas! GAS! Quick, boys!--An ecstasy of fumbling
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time,
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling
And flound'ring like a man in fire or lime.--
Dim through the misty panes and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.

In all my dreams before my helpless sight
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin,
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs
Bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,--
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria mori.

25. wrong about what
I never said I didn't have pride in our soldiers. I have friends there now, so don't give me that. And I don't want them to die for our country. There is no gain for our country in their deaths.

The Wall represents to me something that is going on today. All of those names of people represent REAL fallen patriots, relatives of mine too. None of them voted on the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution - or signed it. They had a job to do and they did it.

I have pride in our people and our nation, but I have never felt so let down by our leaders, in both parties.

29. Crap
I'm astounded that there are people who still think this way. Do you really think that these poor people "died for their country". They died to "protect America's vital interests" - as in lining the pockets of corporate CEO's, politicians, and moronic radio talk show hosts, all nice and comfy in their offices while telling the ignorant and apathetic how bad they feel about "our" losses. You can damned well believe that there isn't a one of them willing to put their pampered butts on the line or risk their kids so they can die "honorably".

What a load of 19th century crap. Smelled then, smelled now.

34. High in the Sangre de Cristo mountains, outside of Angel Fire
on a bright spring day in 2000, prior to the selection of the fraud who sold this death and destruction to the masses, I remember being deeply moved by the Vietnam Memorial which is nestled there like a prayer soaring to the heavens.

In the words of Dr. Victor Westphall:

"When sons or daughters die in battle, parents are confronted with the choice of what they will do to honor the courage and sacrifice of that son or daughter. Following the death of our son, Victor David Westphall III, on May 22, 1968, in Vietnam, we decided to build an enduring symbol of the tragedy and futility of war. Using David's insurance money as the nucleus for our effort, in the late summer of 1968, my wife Jeanne, our younger son Douglas and I started construction of the Vietnam Veterans Peace and Brotherhood Chapel. We hoped that it would serve as a national symbol of the sacrifices of Vietnam veterans and a source of inspiration for the pursuit of a peaceful world.

At that time such a project was not popular; even so, we led the nation in memorializing all Vietnam Veterans; the living, the dead and the maimed in body and spirit. We could not have known that, within two decades, a chastened and belatedly grateful nation would extensively follow our lead. Building Vietnam veterans memorials in ever increasing numbers, including the one in Washington, D.C., became the popular thing to do. Now, perhaps no one knows how many there are scattered across our broad land. We had no idea of changing the mores of a nation. All we wanted to do was assure that our son, and all his buddies, were properly recognized."

Patriotism is one of the darkest sins of the human race. As long as we have politicians and captains of industry who appeal to these base sentiments for the political and economic gains they provide, the road to a peaceful world will be an arduous journey indeed.

54. What a dreadful shame. They are so young and they died for
ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Just to make Bush and his criminal friends rich and so that selfish, brain-dead Americans can joy ride in giant trucks and SUVs. I have not heard one word about the Iraq war and dead soldiers from those oh so patriotic Merikans I see every day. They talk about their ski trips and the presents they got for the holidays and the new SUV they got, but not one word about the suckers who gave their lives so they could be oblivious to suffering. It's like the war is not happening at all.
Died for freedom and their country...what BS.

We knew it when the Bush family friends at the Supreme court gave the Presidency to GWB. We knew this was going to happen. He had to go for the oil and you knew it would be our kids blood that would be spilled not their children by any means.

I hope the active duty military has learned a few things. Bush doesn't give a flip about you. He doesn't value our "middle class" or lower class lives. Your family will cry at your funeral, your children will only have pictures. They don't care and have lied to you.

I hope we have room at the Mall for another wall that we will have to be built. Damn it.

Captain `Big E' Naturally A Leader
Fatally Wounded In Mortar Attack

January 7, 2004
By DAVID OWENS, And DANIELA ALTIMARI Courant Staff Writers

Growing up in Farmington and West Hartford, Eric Thomas Paliwoda distinguished himself as a student, an athlete and a natural leader.

So when colleges came calling for the 6-foot-6 forward on Conard High School's basketball team, it was the U.S. Military Academy at West Point that won his heart. An Army career followed, and that took Paliwoda, 28, to Iraq.
