7. Honolulu's "Big Square Building"

March 15, 1969 marked the historic opening of Hawaii's State Capitol building. The State Capitol -- with its renowned spacious, open-air structure and symbolic features -- is home to the executive and legislative branches of Hawaii's state government and the center of legislative activity in the State.

The aesthetically-pleasing building consists of cone-shaped Senate and House chambers, symbolizing the volcanoes of the Hawaiian Islands; impressive building columns, symbolizing the palm trees that grace our island state; and a vast pool of water surrounding the State Capitol, symbolizing Hawaii as the only island-state in the nation.

The original capitol was 'Iolani Palace, home to Hawaiian royalty before it was overthrown in 1893, but perhaps more familiar to most as (the fictional) Hawaii Five-O HQ. "This is McGarrett. Patch me through to Central..."

8. Albany New York...

Unlike many state capitol buildings which are inspired by Classical architecture, the New York capitol building takes its inspiration from the Hôtel de Ville in Paris. The building history is complicated, extending over a quarter of a century and involving the efforts of four architects. Thus the Capitol demonstrates various styles.

Last year I ended up doing a State Capitols of the West Coast tour...by accident.

Drove through Sacramento (passed capitol bldg)

..then hit Salem OR (also passed capitol)

then hit Olympia (had LUNCH at capitol bldg)

then went to Vancouver. Saw something that looked like a capitol building, not sure tho.

Then, on the way back had to stop in Reno, which meant passing through Carson, and, of course, the capitol bldg.

About Vancouver or Victoria...every time I'm there I feel like I landed into the platonic ideal of what a city *should* be...clean, friendly and full of sushi bars...

The present captial is this rather grandiose structure, at the head of a bouelvard, dominating the smallish town of Frankfort

The former capital was this neoclassical gem (in the Ionic order)

... now a museum.
