I can't believe the price of milk and butter!
I went to the store today, and was suprised at how much the price of milk and butter have gone up. I paid $3.59 for a gallon of store brand milk, and $3.89 for store brand butter.

4. And hormone free meat. And organic produce.
It's horrifying. My grocery bill has increased 30% in a year.

21. Me too.
My grocery bill is going up, up, up, but my workplace can't afford cost of living raises this year (pretty much none can, except Halliburton subsidiaries). I'll probably have to go back to eating rubbish. Creutzfeld-Jakob, here I come.

3. I was talking to the manager of the local store here...
Edited on Mon May-03-04 09:35 PM by Angelus
last week, and he said that butter has risen, on average, $2 per pound. He said he doesn't see this going down anytime soon either. The price of milk has remained constant here, however, at $3.75/gallon.

Thankfully I don't use butter.

7. Much of the "blame" seems to rest

on the Atkins crowd. From what I understand, the diet requires eating more meat, eggs, and dairy in place of fruits, veggies, and grains, and given the number of people who seem to be on the diet, Im sure I dont need to go into supply/demand.

9. That may have an impact on it...
but I also heard that farmers wanted the prices raised so they don't lose money. Who knows.

I like your screenname, by the way. Orestes is one of my favorite A Perfect Circle songs!

26. well, i love butter
and you can get it relatively inexpensively at the dollar stores - 2 cubes for a buck, so that makes it 2 dollars a pound.

6. Eggs shocked me.
$2.19 a doz for mediums. (At the regular store, not at Whole Foods or Alfalfa's.)

Have the chickens started on Birth control?

Milk's always been expensive here. Perhaps it's the short growing season (fodder is more expensive? Colorado) . We found that it's cheaper and better (organic milk, in fact) to get it delivered.

Is that an option in your area?

15. eggs are $1.35 for Jumbo grade A
in Rochester. What the hell is going on in your neck of the woods?

And that's just at Wegmans grocery store.

It's much cheaper from a public market or directly from a farm.

8. And somehow Bush claims that inflation is at an all-time low
Prices are going up like crazy on all products, even the most basic stuff.

Of course, I guess inflation could still be low, because the Average American certainly doesn't have any more money suddenly...

11. Milk's unchanged, I don't use butter... and
for non-perishables, I stock up when they have a sale and use sparingly.

I've $100 worth of hamburger helper I ultimately paid $48 for. That'll last a few months.

They had a sale on frozen veggies, 40% off - only have a 2 week supply, but every penny helps.

and when that Hamburger helper runs out, I can eat ground turkey and vegetables plain and reduce my sodium intake at the same time.

12. Costco is still cheap
$6.50 for 4 pounds of butter (I freeze it), $2.30 for a gallon of milk, $1.40 for a quart of half&half, $1.55 for 18 eggs.

I don't know how Costco does it, but they do.

29. Look for the local dairy milk.
The convenience stores I see still have the local dairy milk at $2/gal in Seattle suburbs. Stay away from megamilk dairies.

Edited on Mon May-03-04 10:03 PM by Independent429
over here at Wegman's in Rochester. And it's not store brand either, its from the Byrne Dairy or Upstate Farms. Looks like you got ripped off pretty bad unless inflation in Atlanta has gotten out of control!

I hate butter so I don't know how much it costs.

(this is for regular milk, not organic or soy or anything crazy)

on edit: nevermind, it really is $1.50

20. You all must cry every day because you don't have a Wegmans!
That's what I tell people that don't have a Wegmans in their town. People in Rochester are spoiled rotten.

You won't believe it until you see it, and grocery companies from all over the damn world come to Rochester to marvel at how awesome Wegmans is.

nyah nyah nyah :P

I'm done

25. I solved the problem, I think
Our house consumes 1% milk so I started buying 2% milk and dilute it fifty percent with water, cutting our milk bill in half. My nine-year-old says it tastes like crap.;)

along with other foods, how can the Bushies claim the inflation rate is only 2.1%? By Enron-style accounts from Arthur Andersen?
