Cast-iron snobs take note: the new nonstick is amazing!
Yeah, yeah, "use cast iron pans". :D

I got one of the new Anolon Titanium nonstick french skillets, and I have to say it is the best pan I've ever worked with. Truly, unbelievably nonstick, to a degree I've never experienced with the cheapies. Plus it goes in the dishwasher. How about them apples? :)

It's got some weight to it, so it feels solid on the burners - much heavier than the cheapies, a little heavier than a scan pan. Good metal handle, oven-safe. And eggs just slip around and fall over with neither butter nor oil. The shape is perfect for flipping stuff with a little wrist action. I don't know how tough the surface is, since I use wood utensils -- but it gets a big recommendation from me.

1. I'm a semi-cast iron snob, and even I use non-stick for lots of things.
How much does this beast of a skillet cost? Assuming my offer is accepted, I'll have a house with a brand new gas range to play with. :D

2. Hey, new house!
Consider my fingers crossed! :)

I got it for $35 at Amazon, which had the best deal when I bought enough other nonsense to get free shipping.

Yeah, I offered, they countered, I countered back...now waiting to hear. :eyes:

I didn't realize you were looking. <in a whispered aside - good time (when the bid is accepted, that is) to celebrate with some new artwork - I have a show coming up in a couple weeks...>

I hope your bid is accepted! That would be wondrous indeed.

8. I've already picked the spot out for my existing original art work.
I'll have to see how much the increase in living expenses will impact my financial flexibility before committing to another piece of art.

I've got a fireplace that will be a focal point. The painting is going right above it! :D

12. Sounds cool! Is it a working fireplace?
Or a gas one?

I'd love to have a house with a real, bona fide fireplace. Ah, that would be sweetness indeed.

16. I'll work on the hot tub...
...all I have is a small cement pad of a patio. Good news: it faces east, perfect for early mornings, and protected from the afternoon sun! :D

The gin is no problem! If you're interested, there's a Texas vodka that is excellent!

26. Ah, nice - facing east, and the rest of the day you don't have to deal
with the sun. I love a cuppa joe in the morning when the sun comes out and the fog is still on the lake and the geese are honking and the bugs aren't out yet and the deer are walking around. But if I could have all that, AND be sitting in a large tub of wondrously hot water, life would be perfect. I'd even be willing to go to a job afterward.

Far be it from me not to try the local vodka. I should never be so rude! In the words of our illustrious, God apoointed Fuhrer over whom I drool and fondle myself every morning in sublime ecstacy because he isn't Al Gore, thank God, "Bring it on!"

The house is in the Pflugerville ISD, but is in the city of Austin. Sorta northwest Austin, I guess. I'll have to have the local DU folks over for a visit when I'm all moved in.

I will probably post a thread for volunteers to help me move. I'm trying to close on the 28th, so moving on the 29th is a definite possibility. I'll have my dad's F-150, too. He'll be on vacation, he won't need it.

3. Don't forget the nutritive value of cast iron
Significant amount of iron, an essential nutrient, leaches
from the pan to the food.

5. Too much iron is actually bad for you....
It accumulates in the liver and can become toxic for people with liver problems. It also triggers excess cholesterol production - the bad kind.

Rule of thumb - unless you're anemic, you don't have to increase your iron intake.

9. One caveat: Bird owners should stick to cast iron
Teflon (and its generics), if overheated, can kill birds (their respiratory system works differently from ours).

But you've just got dogs, right, Robb? In that case, flip away. (I admit I do miss the non-stick for omlets, but my cast-iron skillet is getting there.)

One type of nonstick that I really need to get is silicone -- they've got all sorts of baking pans that are oven-safe, non-toxic, but look like rubber, and things just pop out.

11. hey, teflon is wonderful
and I wouldn't make crepes in anything else, but my cast iron is indestructible, it's older than I am (29) and cost me 5 bucks at a garage sale. and since I don't have a dishwasher, that doesn't matter. There is still nothing that is as versatile as cast iron, for my money.

19. The sticky stuff
Is where the flavor is. The base of the best sauces comes from the sticky stuff. Never get a good carmelization from non-stick.

I'll 'stick' with my stainless steel, copper core.

32. I've never met a non-stick pan
that can stand up to the extremely high heats I cook with.

And the fact that they emit gases toxic to small creatures (okay, so do my brothers, point taken) makes me somewhat nervous.

But if you're happy with your Anolon Titanium, more power to ya! :7

36. Mine belonged to my Grandmother...
Who passed them to HER daughter, who passed them to ME (I got no sisters) and if she every exhibits an intrest in using anything besides a nuker and toaster, I'll pass 'em to MY daughter...

I guestimate them as pre-WWII vintage.

38. I'm still using the same cast-iron skillet
that my mother bought when she was first married - in 1945. Still works exactly the same. Since 1977, when I first started acquiring my own kitchenware, I have probably acquired and discarded a dozen skillets at the very least, but that cast-iron one will outlive me by a century.
