'Breakfast at Tiffanys' Your thoughts?
Edited on Sat May-22-04 04:55 PM by Taverner
OK OK I know this is supposed to be a classic but I watched it again this morning all the way through... and I still don't get the appeal. I know it should provide insight into our parent's generation (well at least my parents - this was their thing - right down to using the term 'mean reds.)

The fact that I actually sat through the whole thing should say something....

But anyway - my big question is why should I even care about Holly? What are her ambitions? Find a rich guy. Same problem I have with Sex in the City - Carries ambitions are no different.

I'm not even going to start on Mickey Rooney's horribly stereotypical portrayal of her Japanese Neighbor (and shit if he can't even get that right - he's doing steretypical Chinese, not Japanese....geez)

Anyway - I'm sure someone out there agrees or disagrees...

1. A gorgeous film score (including "Moon River") and Audrey Hepburn...

And that's pretty much it. It was nice seeing Patricia Neal in it.

"Breakfast at Tiffany's" is ok, not great.

2. I personally love the movie
Both of the main characters in fact dispise what they desire and who they are becoming. One wants a rich guy, the other is a sort of giglio but they both find love enough for the other to finally let go of those amibitions and try to be happy.
I love the line "I LOVE You, you belong to me!" When he's trying to convince her to stay with him in the taxi. I can see it's weak points, but i think it is a classic.

3. I find that movie extremely irritating
"Moon River" is a great song - too bad it is wasted on a
bad movie.

4. I like it.
It's quirky.
No happy Hollywood ending.
I think I'm into quirky now.

5. Audrey Hepburn, alone, would make this movie worthwhile...
She positively radiates onscreen. The music is beautiful and its representative of a very interesting time in history. Women weren't expected to be particularly ambitious then and her character's whole appeal was her whimsy. Its hard to be drivingly ambitious and whimsically adorable at the same time.

6. Now, everytime I see George Peppard
I keep waiting for Mr. T to come around the corner saying, "I ain't gettin' on no plane, fool!"

7. I've never seen it but ...
I remember a story about it that refuses to leave my brain.

After the movie's release the director got a very brief letter saying simply, "It's Tiffany." by the head of Tiffany & Co. So I never forgot that. Every time somebody calls it "Tiffany's" I think of that and know they are wrong.
