I can't decide what to do with myself
I was offered a pretty big promotion but it is with a big catch. First of all it would mean about an hour and a half commute everyday which would be a real pain in the ass. Second of all the job they offered me was as a manager, but the location is a know trouble spot and has gone through 5 managers in the last 5 months.

On the other hand if I am able to turn around this trouble spot I would be making really good money and it would fast track e into upper management.

SO the question is do I go for broke, spend a month working and driving all the time, or do I go the safe way and keep making the very good money I already am and with only a 4 minute drive. (and if I don't take it there is a chance I could get a similar job in a few months but at a closer location without all the problems..)

1. Insufficient information
Edited on Sun May-23-04 08:21 PM by HypnoToad
Is your current position a stable one, where all information you know suggests they won't be trying to get rid of your job?

Did you present them traits that suggest you're management material?

How about a guarantee that you can go back to your previous position if you can't turn the site around?

1.5 hours round trip, or one way?

4. Ha ha, death slot.
The trip would be 3 hours total each day an hour and a half there and the same back. If I don't cut it there I could have my old job back, but it would make it a lot harder for me to move up with this company.

I don't think that they see the job as a death slot, more like a trial by fire.

3. You gotta take it...
Turning down a promotion shows you're not a team player. You must proceed with confidence or you may get squeezed out next time they have layoffs.

There is an adage that the way to get ahead is to "go where the problems are" -- just go in, kick ass the first day, get them to respect and (maybe) fear you a little and you'll do great.

Oh, and ask for a company car and gas allowance.

5. I think you are probably right
They way I see it I am only 22 unmarried with no children so If I am going to take a chance the time is now, but I am pretty cautious by nature and I am already making enough to be comfortable.

6. Before taking a position
in a known trouble spot - make sure you will have the backup to do what may need to be done.
Maybe they are tying the hands of the managers i.e., keeping on a deadwood relative, not backing up the manager.
Find out what the problems were that the other managers had.

PS Four minute drive??? Just wondereing - why don't you walk?

7. I have been trying to get in touch with the woman that just
washed out there and try to find out what happened to her from her point of view. What I hear from others is that she couldn't deal with the preasure so she left the company, but I want to hear her side of things.

As for the walking it would take a very long time to get there on foot, but I do car pool.
