Mac OS X update keeps SP Power Mac G5 owners awake
Power Mac Owners Report Sleep Issues

The latest update to Apple Computer's Mac OS X operating system has left a significant number of its single processor Power Mac G5 owners with a computer that will no longer properly put itself to sleep.

After installing the Mac OS X 10.3.5 update, a good number of 1.8 GHz Power Mac G5 owners are reporting similar problems when they attempt to put their Macs to sleep--their displays turn off, but the system fan refuses to do the same and continues to spin at full blast. A few affected users also report that their systems will eventually freeze-up, prompting a forced restarted by disconnecting the computer's power supply.

Apple is apparently aware of the issue but has yet to make any official statement on the matter or acknowledge that a fix is in progress. Since the the Mac OS X 10.3.5 update was released on Monday, Apple's support forums have accumulated nearly 150 posts on the subject from disgruntled Power Mac owners.

1. No problems here!
Of course, I often only put the monitor to sleep, not the rest of the machine. I'd love to know what people do that cause all the problems with OS updates. I've never had a single problem.

4. Can't wait for the G5 iMac due end of this month...
anxious to see what it looks like. ThinkSecret.com says they are getting rid of the adjustable neck, which I think is a big mistake. My kid and I share a G4 iMac and I love the flexibilty in screen positioning that it gives.

My iMac 17" keeps me up all night too because I have so much fun on this machine.

Edit: This is a much better Mac rumor site: http://www.macosrumors.com/81104L.php

7. No Software
If you plug an iPod into my system it brings up iPod Updater and tell me I need to update the software in my iPod, if I click OK, it then tells me there is not an iPod attached to my system..

In the mid to early 80s ppl knew that you had to reset a modem on powerup. In 2004 Apple's dialer does not do this. The result is on power on, if you try to dial out, it tells you most of the time, there is no dial tone.... But after it disconnects, on second try, it finds a dial tone. Also there is a phone icon in the top bar, if I click on it, it shows a drop down with things I can do like CONNECT. If I click on CONNECT 50% of the time it just closes the drop down box and I have to redo the click on phone and click on CONNECT.... Grrrrrrr

9. There is something wrong. . .none of that behavior is common/normal
Is your system under warranty? If so try to get help from your dealer. Something ain't right. . .hardware problem, or corrupted software.

If not, there is a pretty good message board at http://www.dealmac.com where you can ask questions . . . the posters there are knowledgeable and can help you trouble shoot. Look on the right side of the home page for links to the forum.

10. How do you defrag and optimize a boot disk Mac 10.3 (non dual boot)?
I use Alsoft's Diskwarrior on my dual boot (OS's 10.x.x/9.2.x) iMac, but it requires booting from Diskwarrior's OS 9.2.x.

New Macs don't/can't boot 9.2.x.

How do you non dual boot OS 10.3.x Mac users defrag AND optimize their internal and external (Firewire) hard drives?

11. Isn't there a OS X version of Diskwarrior?
I am using Norton Tools OS X; when I want to defrag my internal drive I boot from external firewire. And Vice Versa. . .

12. Dual G5 requires a new boot disk
I had to buy a new bootable CD from Alsoft ($20 shipped) to boot my Dual G5... sigh.

There's been a real lack of good diagnostics since the introduction of OS X... TechTool Pro seems basically worthless.
